Veeva Systems sells cloud software built only for the life sciences industry. About 55% of revenue comes from R&D and Quality products (the Vault applications drug and device makers use to run clinical trials, regulatory submissions, drug safety reporting and quality records) and about 45% from Commercial products (CRM software for pharmaceutical sales and medical teams, plus data products). Nearly all revenue is subscriptions billed a year in advance, and the company served 1,552 customers at January 31, 2026. It has no debt and held about $6.6 billion of cash and short-term investments at that date. How we measured earnings. We start from operating cash flow and then (1) subtract stock-based pay as a real cost ($473 million in the year to January 2026, about $2.83 a share), (2) remove the yearly swing in working capital, including the growth in customer prepayments, (3) subtract the capital spending needed to keep the business running, which is tiny (under 1% of revenue). On that basis owner earnings rose from $0.54 a share in the year to January 2017 to $5.89 in the year to January 2026. Two adjustments matter for the valuation. First, from 2022 to early 2025 a US tax rule forced Veeva to deduct research costs slowly, so it paid about $345 million more cash tax than it booked; the 2025 federal tax law restored immediate deduction, and the year to January 2026 recovered $65 million of it. We value the business on booked tax, which removes both distortions. Second, about $278 million a year of pre-tax income is interest on the cash pile. We take that interest out of earnings and count the cash at face value instead, so the cash is neither double counted nor valued as if it could only ever earn today's interest rate. On this basis the operating business earned about $4.28 a share in the year to January 2026, up from $3.24 and $2.43 in the two years before. Starting point. The three most recent years have a middle value of $3.24 a share. We start the base case from the $4.28 already earned in fiscal 2026 rather than that middle value, because the business reached it without one-time help (the year actually carried about $31 million of one-time legal costs), and the first half of fiscal 2027 confirms it: revenue rose 17% and operating income 28% compared with a year earlier. Last year operating owner earnings grew about 31%. The base case assumes 12% for fiscal 2027, well below that. What growth we count. Veeva's contracts carry an annual inflation price adjustment, and for many years its growth has come mainly from existing customers adding users and further Vault applications. Revenue has grown every year for more than a decade, including through the pandemic and the 2022-23 biotech funding slump, and all of it was paid for from the company's own cash. We credit this ongoing expansion at rates well below what it has actually delivered (revenue grew about 21% a year over the last nine years, and 10-16% a year in the last three): 9% a year in the base case for years 2 to 4, slowing to 3% by year 10. We do not count management's long-range revenue targets, new AI products, or any win-back of lost CRM customers. The known headwind. Veeva's older CRM product runs on Salesforce's platform. That partnership ended in September 2025, and the older product is supported only until December 31, 2029. Customers are moving to Veeva's own Vault CRM, but the annual report says some large customers have chosen Salesforce's competing product instead. As of August 2026 management said 12 of the 20 largest pharmaceutical companies had committed to Vault CRM and 2 had not decided, which suggests about 6 are leaving. Veeva does not report CRM revenue on its own, so we estimate the size of the loss. The base case assumes about $150 million of annual subscription revenue (about 12% of Commercial subscription revenue) goes away between 2027 and early 2030. That takes roughly $0.52 a share off yearly earnings. Cases. Bear ($96): fiscal 2027 grows only 8%; growth then slows to 5% and then 3% a year; about $250 million of CRM revenue is lost (both undecided top-20 companies and some mid-size customers also go to Salesforce), costing about $0.86 a share a year. After year 10 we assume earnings shrink steadily to nothing over the following 20 years. The CRM episode shows that even deeply embedded software can be replaced when customers are forced to move platforms anyway. Cash adds about $37 a share, which puts a solid floor under this case. Base ($147): the path described above. After year 10 earnings stay flat in dollars for 20 years and then fade to zero over the following decade. We assume they last this long because Veeva's R&D and Quality systems hold the official, regulator-inspected records of trials, submissions and quality. Changing them means re-validating those systems, and that switching cost is visible in the customer counts: net of customers lost, R&D and Quality customers rose from 1,078 to 1,196 over two years. Operations are worth about $110 a share and cash about $37. Bull ($182): fiscal 2027 grows 15%, in line with the first half. Expansion continues at 12% a year for three years and then slows to 6%. The CRM loss is smaller, about $100 million. Earnings hold flat for 25 years after year 10. All cases discount at 6%. There is no debt to worry about, so the main risk is how durable and how fast the growth is, not the balance sheet. What would make this wrong. The downside would be worse than our bear case if CRM defections go well beyond the large customers already announced, if lost CRM customers also drop Veeva's data products, or if AI tools let customers build or buy cheaper replacements for Vault applications. The annual report lists AI and custom-built software as competitive risks, but so far no loss of that kind shows up in the numbers. The estimate would be too low if the Salesforce migrations stall and customers come back, which management expects in 2027-28 but which we do not count. Stock-based pay is large (about 15% of revenue). We treat it as a full cost, and recent share buybacks ($170 million in fiscal 2026 and $473 million in the first half of fiscal 2027) have begun to offset the dilution. The CRM revenue at risk is our estimate, not a reported figure.
