Universal Technical Institute (UTI) trains students for skilled-trade and healthcare careers. Its UTI segment runs automotive, diesel, collision, welding, electrical, motorcycle, marine and aviation programs under the Universal Technical Institute and MIAT brands, with manufacturer-sponsored training for brands such as Ford, BMW, Harley-Davidson and Ducati. Its Concorde segment (Concorde Career Colleges, bought December 2022) trains nurses, dental hygienists and other allied-health workers. Essentially all revenue comes from students in the United States, and about 78% of fiscal 2025 revenue (cash basis) was funded by federal student aid and veterans benefits, so the business depends on staying eligible for those programs. How we measure earnings. We look at the cash the business generates after the real costs of keeping it running: rent, stock-based pay, tuition that turns out to be uncollectible, and the capital spending needed to maintain the existing campuses. Our previous analysis overstated this figure. It counted campus rent as a temporary timing item and added back the charge for uncollectible student accounts, which made fiscal 2025 cash earnings look like about $1.94 per share, well above reported net income of $1.13. Once rent (about $22 million a year) and bad debts ($22 million in fiscal 2025, up from $7.5 million in fiscal 2024) are counted as the real costs they are, fiscal 2025 comes to about $1.14 per share and fiscal 2024 to about $1.09. Those figures are close to reported net income, which is what you would expect for a business whose depreciation roughly equals its upkeep spending. We also now put the years before December 2023 on a comparable share count by including the roughly 21 million shares the Series A convertible preferred turned into when it converted. We value the business before the interest it pays its lenders and then subtract what it owes. Before interest, the business produced about $70.6 million in fiscal 2024 and $69.3 million in fiscal 2025. That is about $1.25 per current diluted share (55.9 million shares), and it is our starting level. We use those two years because they are the only full years of the combined UTI-plus-Concorde business. Fiscal 2023 is left out because it held only ten months of Concorde and was weighed down by campus construction, and earlier years describe a smaller business that lost money from 2016 to 2019. What the current year shows. Fiscal 2026 is weaker. Through June 2026, revenue rose 7.8% to $661 million and new student starts rose 9.5%, but net income fell from $44.3 million to $15.5 million. Management attributes about $27.6 million of costs to opening new campuses and programs. Separately, bad-debt charges rose to $22.4 million in nine months, 3.4% of revenue against 2.6% a year earlier, and management said fourth-quarter high-school starts in automotive and diesel were running below plan. The company cut its fiscal 2026 net income outlook to $32-36 million and expects about $110 million of capital spending. Before interest, cash earnings fell about 2.5% per share in fiscal 2025. Our base case starts fiscal 2027 about 12% below the $1.25 starting level, at $1.10, so it does not assume a rebound the evidence has not yet shown. Growth we credit and growth we don't. Management plans to open at least two new campuses and six new programs a year through fiscal 2029, pending regulatory approval. That plan has not yet been proven. It is being funded partly with borrowed money, and in fiscal 2026 it cut profits sharply. We therefore give no credit to campuses that are not yet built. We also treat their launch costs as discretionary investment rather than a permanent cost, except in the bear case. We do credit the campuses already opened or under construction: San Antonio, Texas; Atlanta, Georgia (opened July 2026, with first starts about 30% ahead of the company's plan); and a co-branded healthcare campus in Fort Myers, Florida. We also credit programs recently added at existing campuses, as they fill up. Base case (about $15.27 per share). Bad debts stay at the higher 2026 rate and part of this year's cost pressure lingers, so fiscal 2027 starts at about $1.10 per share. The new campuses then return earnings to about $1.25 by fiscal 2031. After that we hold earnings flat in dollars, which means shrinking after inflation, for a total of 30 years, and credit nothing beyond that. UTI has trained technicians since 1965 and is tied to employers through manufacturer programs, which supports a long life. But its dependence on federal aid rules, and its losses as recently as 2016-2019, argue against assuming it lasts forever. The business is worth about $16.88 per share ($944 million). It owes about $1.61 per share net ($90 million, explained below), leaving about $15.27. Bear case (about $9.43 per share). Management keeps spending on expansion at the fiscal 2026 pace through fiscal 2029, and the new campuses earn little from it. Bad debts keep rising, weak high-school starts keep automotive and diesel margins down, and new federal loan limits from the 2025 One Big Beautiful Bill Act cut some of the aid students can use. Cash earnings before interest run about $0.85-0.90 per share through fiscal 2029. They then settle at about $1.00 for the rest of a 20-year life, with nothing credited after that. The revolving credit line due November 2027 is refinanced at a spread about one percentage point higher, which adds about $0.07 per share to what is owed. The business is worth about $11.11 per share ($622 million) and owes about $1.68 per share, leaving about $9.43. Even here, cash earnings before interest (around $47 million a year) cover the roughly $10 million interest bill several times over. Bull case (about $21.19 per share). Bad debts settle back toward the fiscal 2025 rate. The campuses already opened ramp as fast as their early results suggest, lifting earnings to about $1.52 per share by fiscal 2031. New programs added at existing campuses and annual tuition increases, both things the company has done steadily in recent years, add about 2% a year through year 10, to about $1.68. Earnings then hold flat through year 35. The business is worth about $22.80 per share ($1.28 billion). After about $1.61 per share of net debt, that leaves about $21.19. No campuses beyond those already built are credited, even here. What it owes. At June 30, 2026 the company had $95.0 million drawn on its revolving credit line (floating, SOFR plus 1.85%, due November 2027), up from $20 million at September 2025 because it borrowed to pay for campus construction. It also had a $26.8 million term loan secured by the Avondale, Arizona campus (due May 2028), a $35.4 million term loan secured by the Lisle, Illinois campus (due April 2029), both with interest-rate swaps, and $3.1 million of finance leases, for $160.3 million in total. Against that it held $130.1 million of cash and $40.1 million of short-term investments. June is the seasonal low for cash, and a year earlier the business ran with about $71 million, so we treat $80 million as needed to operate and the remaining $90.1 million as surplus. We also count about $20 million of remaining spending to finish the campuses credited above. That gives net debt of about $90 million. These borrowing rates are close to our 6% rate, so no further adjustment is made outside the bear case. Campus leases are not counted as debt because their rent is already deducted from earnings. What changed since our last analysis. Our previous estimates were about $27.74, $42.54 and $50.85 per share. The large drop has three causes. First, the earnings measure no longer leaves out rent and bad debts, which cut the starting level by roughly 40%. Second, we no longer credit the planned campuses that do not yet exist. Third, we now subtract the company's debt, net of surplus cash, instead of leaving it out. Adding back interest and counting surplus cash worked the other way, but only slightly. What would make this wrong. On the upside, the new campuses could fill as fast as Atlanta's first months suggest while bad debts stabilize, so that the expansion plan earns good returns. On the downside, a change in federal aid eligibility, loan limits or the rule capping how much revenue a school may take from federal sources could hit enrollment across the board. Or bad debts could keep climbing faster than revenue, as they have for two years.

Chart analysis
A chartist would see a powerful multi-year uptrend that broke violently. The shares climbed from single digits in 2022-2023 to a peak near $43.60 on August 5, 2026. The next day they gapped down about 34% on the fiscal third-quarter report and lowered outlook, a breakaway gap that decisively broke the rising trend. The slide continued to a low near $19.50 on September 14, 2026, roughly a 55% drawdown from the peak, and the stock has since been basing in the $20-21 range, closing about $20.30 on September 25. With the price below its recent moving averages and the gap near $30-40 now overhead resistance, chartists would call the trend broken and wait for this $19.50-21 base to hold and for a reclaim of the low-to-mid $20s before calling a bottom. A decisive break below $19.50 would signal further downside.
