Tennessee Valley Authority (TVC) stock intrinsic value fair value estimate & owner earnings analysis

Margin of safety$0.00 ComplexityHigh Updated
The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) is a corporate agency of the United States government. It generates electricity from nuclear, natural gas, coal, hydroelectric and other sources. It sells that power mainly to about 150 local power companies and some large industrial and federal customers across the Tennessee Valley region. TVA has no common or preferred stock and no shareholders. The federal government owns it, and it pays no dividends to outside investors. Its net income is retained to repay debt and to fund investment in the power system. Its annual report lists no registered equity securities, so the ticker TVC does not correspond to an ownership stake in the business. We value businesses by what their owner earnings are worth per share. TVA has no shares to own and no claim on those earnings that an investor can buy, so that approach does not apply. Owner earnings per share cannot be computed, and we show zero for each case. Zero means there is nothing to value, not that the business is worthless. TVA is a large, operating utility, and its annual report contains no warning about its ability to continue operating. Anyone holding TVA's debt is a lender, and the return is the interest. That return depends on TVA's ability to service its debt, and it is not an equity return. Because no equity return is available, we assign no margin-of-safety price and no business condition that would change that. Limits of this review: it rested on a targeted check of the fiscal 2025 annual report. We did not build a multi-year earnings series or a detailed financial reconstruction, because there is no share count to divide by.
