Business condition attached to the margin of safety Four consecutive quarters of positive owner earnings (operating cash flow excluding working-capital swings, after stock-based pay and capital spending) achieved without a new share sale, with trailing revenue comfortably above the lender's minimum-revenue requirement.
What the business is. Teknova makes the liquid media, buffers, agar plates and other chemical formulations that biotech, pharmaceutical and academic labs use to grow cells and run experiments, from a manufacturing campus in Hollister, California. In 2025 it sold $40.5 million: $31.0 million of Lab Essentials (catalog and custom research reagents), $7.7 million of Clinical Solutions (GMP-grade reagents made for customers' regulated drug-manufacturing processes) and $1.8 million of other products. About 94% of sales are in the United States. In 2021-2022 it spent about $48 million building out new production capacity, well ahead of demand, and has not made money since. Cash the business actually produces. We measure owner earnings as operating cash flow, with working-capital swings removed, less stock-based pay (a real cost) and less the capital spending needed to maintain the business. The record: roughly -$50.7 million in 2022, -$33.1 million in 2023, -$16.0 million in 2024, -$9.8 million in 2025 and -$3.8 million in the first half of 2026. Our independent rebuild from net income plus non-cash charges matches operating cash flow in every year. Large write-offs (a $16.6 million goodwill impairment in 2022, plus trade-name and equipment impairments in 2022-2023) are added back as sunk costs rather than treated as ongoing. One accounting judgement goes the other way: the company writes down unsellable inventory every year ($4.5 million in 2024, $2.1 million in 2025). The standard method adds that back, but it is cash genuinely spent on stock that is never sold, so our cases charge a normal $1.35 million a year (the 2020-2025 average). Starting level. The post-build-out, post-restructuring years 2024-2025 put cash flow before interest at a median of about -$11.4 million. The four quarters since mid-2025 have been consistently better, so we moved the starting level up to the first-half-2026 pace: about -$6.3 million a year before interest, or about -$7.6 million after the normal inventory write-down charge, on a revenue run rate of about $46.5 million. The loss narrowed by $6.2 million (39%) in 2025; our base case assumes no further improvement in year one, because the improvement so far came largely from cost cuts and gross margin recovery (19% in 2024, 33% in 2025, 37% in the first half of 2026) that are already in the starting level. What we credit and what we leave out. Sales rose 16% in the first half of 2026 and management has raised its outlook, but that growth depends on customer demand and share gains that are not contracted, so it is not credited in the base case. The one structural advantage we can point to is capacity already built and paid for: extra revenue needs little new capital, and in the first half of 2026 each extra dollar of sales improved cash flow by about 37 cents. That lever is used only in the bull case. Base case (-$0.19 a share). Revenue holds at today's run rate and the business keeps losing about $7.6 million a year. Cash above the lender's $8 million minimum-cash floor (about $9.4 million) plus the $5 million revolver covers roughly two years. At current scale the operation does not earn its keep, so the story ends there: after two more years of losses the operation is sold or wound down for roughly the value of its receivables and inventory, net of payables, about $5 million, with the specialized facility and its leases assumed to offset each other. The business is worth about -$9.5 million; it owes a net $1.0 million (the $13.2 million MidCap term loan, a 5% exit fee and about $1.5 million for interest well above 6%, less about $14.4 million of cash and Treasuries beyond operating needs), leaving about -$10.5 million for shareholders. In plain terms, at today's scale further losses would consume more than the business's assets are worth. Bear case (-$0.22). Sales fall about 11%, as they did in 2023, to roughly $41 million, adding about $1.9 million to the annual loss and bringing trailing revenue close to the lender's minimum-revenue covenant ($39 million for 2025). The cash cushion lasts about a year, forcing a financing on poor terms or a lender-led sale that realizes about $3 million. The business is worth about -$10.6 million, owes a net $1.0 million, and shareholders are left with about -$11.5 million: the company would owe more than it is worth. Bull case (+$0.37). Sales grow at the company's own long-run rate of 5.3% a year (2020-2025, a period that included the 2023 decline), and each extra dollar of sales adds 37 cents of cash flow on the existing capacity. The business reaches cash break-even in year seven to eight and earns about $4 million a year by year ten. After that we hold earnings flat rather than assume more growth, supported by the stickiness of GMP reagents that customers have written into their regulated manufacturing processes. The losses before break-even total roughly $25 million and would have to be funded by selling more shares (the company has a $225 million shelf registration and raised equity in 2023 and 2024); that cost is already inside the value. The business is worth about $20.9 million, owes a net $1.0 million, leaving about $19.9 million, or $0.37 a share. Debt. The term loan carries SOFR plus 6.45% with a 3.75% floor (at least about 10.3%), requires $8 million of minimum cash and a trailing-revenue minimum, begins amortizing on April 1, 2028 and matures March 1, 2030. That covenant package, not the interest bill, is the pressure point in the bear case. What would make this wrong. The whole gap between these values and a healthy business is the path to profitability. If revenue keeps compounding at the recent mid-teens pace while costs stay flat, break-even could arrive in two to three years rather than seven, and the value would be far higher than any case here. We have not credited that because it has not yet happened. Four consecutive quarters of positive owner earnings, without another share sale, would change the picture materially.

Chart analysis
Teknova came public in June 2021 and spent the next several years in a long, grinding downtrend as the post-IPO enthusiasm drained away, eventually basing near the $2 area (the 52-week low was about $1.91). Over the last year the stock has staged a powerful reversal, climbing roughly fivefold to about $9.30 in late September 2026 and pressing against its 52-week high near $9.48. A chartist would call this a completed long-term bottom followed by a strong new uptrend with price well above its rising moving averages; the $9.50 area is the immediate resistance to clear, while the size and speed of the run leave the chart extended and vulnerable to a pullback toward prior breakout levels in the $6-7 range. The shares remain far below 2021 IPO-era prices, so older overhead supply sits above.
