bear $2.93 base $9.49 bull $17.96 margin of safety $3.43 market price* $7.84
Tredegar today is a much smaller company than its ten-year record suggests. It sold its personal care films business in 2020 and its Brazilian flexible packaging operation, Terphane, in November 2024, and what is left is two businesses: Bonnell Aluminum, a US custom aluminum extruder serving building and construction, automotive, electrical and distribution customers, and High Performance Films, which makes surface protection films for electronics manufacturers and thin packaging films for tissue and towel. Because of those exits, and because reported cash flow in 2022 and 2023 was dominated by roughly $78 million of one-time cash contributions to terminate the company's pension plan, only 2025 is a clean full year for the business as it now stands, so we have valued it on that shortened history rather than the full decade. Owner earnings per share on the reported whole-company numbers ran $1.13 in 2021, negative $1.81 in 2022, negative $0.13 in 2023, $0.25 in 2024 and $0.40 in 2025. Normalising 2025 for an unusually large working capital build in a year when sales grew 21 percent, and for about $6 million of professional fees on transaction work that management says will not repeat, points to sustainable owner earnings closer to $26 million, or roughly $0.75 per share. The pension question that overhung this company for years is now closed: the qualified plan was terminated and annuitised in 2023, the retiree medical plan was wound up in 2025, and only a $1.4 million unfunded supplemental obligation remains. The sale of the Brazilian business is likewise settled, with the final post-closing payment received in early 2025 and nothing further carried as receivable. Borrowings are modest at about $46 million against $17 million of cash, on a revolving facility committed to 2030 that still had $87.5 million available to draw at year end, with lease commitments of a further $13 million. The values below are stated after deducting that borrowing. The base case assumes segment profits hold near 2025 levels and grow about two percent a year, discounted at ten percent, and comes to $9.49 a share. The bear case is grounded in the company's own worst recent stretch, 2023, when the films business earned less than half its current profit and extrusion volumes were weak, and assumes that level of earning power persists for a decade with essentially no recovery, discounted at twelve percent; it comes to $2.93. That downside is a live risk rather than a theoretical one: extrusion is capital intensive and heavy in fixed costs, so profit falls faster than volume in a downturn, and the company disclosed that weekly order intake fell about 24 percent after US aluminium tariffs rose to 50 percent in June 2025 and had not recovered by early 2026. The films business is also concentrated, with four customers accounting for roughly 13 percent of total sales, and management flags ageing plant and legacy systems that will require reinvestment, including a long-running systems project with about $21 million capitalised and not yet in service. The bull case assumes extrusion volumes recover and films returns to 2024 profitability, growing four percent a year and discounted at 8.5 percent, giving $17.96. We anchor the margin-of-safety price mainly on the bear case, blending in a minority weight of the base case because a full decade with no cyclical recovery at all is a stress test rather than a central expectation, and then apply a further 30 percent discount for the genuine uncertainty around end demand, customer concentration and future capital needs. That gives a margin-of-safety price of $3.43, a little over half of book value. We are reasonably but not highly confident in this range: the balance sheet is now clean and both businesses generate real cash, but neither has a durable competitive moat, and the gap between the bear and bull outcomes is wide.
Fiscal yearOwner's earningsMethodology
2025 $0.40 ▼
Owner earnings = CFO - capex - SBC = 32,977 - 17,241 - 1,808 = 13,928 ($ thousands); divided by 34,735,139 weighted-average diluted shares = $0.4010/sh. Capex tag: us-gaap:PaymentsToAcquirePropertyPlantAndEquipment (17,241 = Aluminum Extrusions 15,392 + High Performance Films 1,849; no discontinued-operations capex this year). SBC tag: us-gaap:EmployeeBenefitsAndShareBasedCompensation. EPS tie-out: NetIncomeLoss 33,476 / 34,735,139 = $0.9638 vs reported diluted EPS $0.96 - ties; continuing-operations diluted EPS was $0.69, discontinued $0.27. Source: accession 0001628280-26-016665 (FY2025 10-K, filed 2026-03-11). The 20 filed cash-flow lines were re-added and sum exactly to 32,977, confirming the tag. FIRST CLEAN YEAR of the two-segment company (Aluminum Extrusions + High Performance Films) after the Nov-2024 Terphane sale; the only discontinued-operations item is a non-cash 9,657 gain reversed out of CFO, with the matching 9,835 post-closing settlement received in investing. NORMALISATION USED IN THE VALUATION (not in this metric): the literal figure is depressed by a 14,830 working-capital build on 20.9% sales growth and by 6,400 of professional fees on business-development work that management states will not repeat in 2026; cash taxes (3,358) were also well below the 6,584 book charge. Normalising those gives sustainable owner earnings of roughly 26,000, about $0.75/sh, against maintenance capex of about 18,500 versus D&A of 21,729 (2026 D&A guided to about 20,000).
2024 $0.25 ▼
Owner earnings = CFO - capex - SBC = 25,508 - 14,347 - 2,498 = 8,663 ($ thousands); divided by 34,346,242 weighted-average diluted shares = $0.2522/sh. Capex tag: us-gaap:PaymentsToAcquirePropertyPlantAndEquipment. SBC tag: us-gaap:EmployeeBenefitsAndShareBasedCompensation. EPS tie-out: NetIncomeLoss (64,565) / 34,346,242 = -$1.8798 vs reported diluted EPS -$1.88 - ties; the loss is driven by the 74,877 pre-tax loss on the Terphane sale (including 102,300 of recycled currency-translation and hedge losses) and a 13,271 goodwill impairment at the Clearfield, Utah extrusion unit, neither of which is a cash item, which is why owner earnings are positive while EPS is deeply negative. Source: accession 0001628280-26-016665 (FY2025 10-K, filed 2026-03-11), most recently filed accession carrying FY2024; identical to the FY2024 10-K. DISTORTION (continuing vs discontinued): the consolidated cash-flow statement is combined, so both CFO and capex include Terphane for the 10 months to 1-Nov-2024. Terphane capex was 2,489, so continuing-operations capex was 11,858 (Aluminum Extrusions 10,097 + High Performance Films 1,761). Terphane's operating cash flow is not separately disclosed. Continuing-operations diluted EPS was $0.03 versus total diluted EPS of -$1.88.
2023 -$0.13 ▼
Owner earnings = CFO - capex - SBC = 23,995 - 26,446 - 1,978 = (4,429) ($ thousands); divided by 34,133,078 weighted-average diluted shares = -$0.1298/sh. Capex tag: us-gaap:PaymentsToAcquirePropertyPlantAndEquipment. SBC tag: us-gaap:EmployeeBenefitsAndShareBasedCompensation (1,978 per the cash-flow statement; the shareholders'-equity statement shows 3,036 for restricted-stock value - the cash-flow figure is the correct non-cash add-back). EPS tie-out: NetIncomeLoss (105,905) / 34,133,078 = -$3.1027 vs reported diluted EPS -$3.10 - ties. Source: accession 0001628280-26-016665 (FY2025 10-K, filed 2026-03-11), the most recently filed accession carrying FY2023; identical to the FY2023 and FY2024 10-K values. DISTORTIONS, TWO OF THEM: (1) CFO and capex are whole-company and include the Terphane flexible packaging business, whose FY2023 capex alone was 4,323 - continuing-operations capex was therefore 22,123; (2) CFO absorbs 28,269 of pension and post-retirement plan contributions made to complete the termination and annuitization of the qualified defined benefit pension plan in Oct 2023 (which also produced a non-cash 92,291 settlement loss in net income, and a 34,891 goodwill impairment). Adjusting only for the pension cash, FY2023 owner earnings would have been roughly +23,840, or +$0.70/sh. This year is not representative of the two-segment company that exists today.
2022 -$1.81 ▼
Owner earnings = CFO - capex - SBC = (20,844) - 36,875 - 3,619 = (61,338) ($ thousands); divided by 33,826,430 weighted-average diluted shares = -$1.8133/sh. Capex tag: us-gaap:PaymentsToAcquirePropertyPlantAndEquipment. SBC tag: us-gaap:EmployeeBenefitsAndShareBasedCompensation. EPS tie-out: NetIncomeLoss 28,455 / 33,826,430 = $0.8412 vs reported diluted EPS $0.84 - ties, so the negative owner earnings are NOT an earnings loss but a cash-flow event. Source: accession 0000850429-23-000004 (FY2022 10-K, filed 2023-03-16); value identical in the FY2023 and FY2024 10-Ks, so dedupe by most-recent filing changes nothing. SIGN/MAGNITUDE CHECK PASSED WITH EXPLANATION: CFO swung from +70,583 (2021) to -20,844 (2022), more than a 3x move with a sign flip. Per the FY2022 10-K MD&A the cause is a $50 million voluntary 'Special Contribution' to the defined benefit pension plan ahead of its termination, plus higher income taxes paid and a large working-capital build from record aluminum prices - not a tagging error. DISTORTION: whole-company as reported; includes Terphane (sold Nov 2024, later reclassified to discontinued operations) and the $50m pension pre-funding, so this year is not representative of the business Tredegar owns today.
2021 $1.13 ▼
Owner earnings = CFO - capex - SBC = 70,583 - 27,361 - 5,167 = 38,055 ($ thousands); divided by 33,670,250 weighted-average diluted shares = $1.1302/sh. Capex tag used: us-gaap:PaymentsToAcquirePropertyPlantAndEquipment (this filer does not use PaymentsToAcquireProductiveAssets). SBC tag used: us-gaap:EmployeeBenefitsAndShareBasedCompensation, which is the cash-flow line this filer labels 'Stock-based compensation expense'; us-gaap:ShareBasedCompensation returns no rows for this registrant. EPS tie-out: NetIncomeLoss 57,826 / 33,670,250 = $1.7174 vs reported diluted EPS $1.72 - ties. Source: accession 0000850429-22-000007 (FY2021 10-K, filed 2022-03-11); values deduped by (tag, period_start, period_end) keeping the most-recently-filed accession, and identical across all accessions reporting FY2021. DISTORTION: whole-company as reported. Includes the Terphane flexible packaging business (Brazil), sold to Oben Group 1-Nov-2024 and only reclassified to discontinued operations from the FY2024 10-K onward, so this figure is NOT comparable to the two-segment (Aluminum Extrusions + High Performance Films) company that exists today. Also a peak-cycle year: FY2021 diluted EPS of $1.72 was the highest of the decade.
