TELEFLEX INC (TFX) stock intrinsic value fair value estimate & owner earnings analysis

Margin of safety$16.00 Updated
$0.00 $115.00
bear $0.00 base $31.00 bull $115.00 margin of safety $16.00 market price* $130.99
Business condition attached to the margin of safety Position sizing should wait for the Strategic Divestitures (Acute Care and Interventional Urology sale) to close without further negative surprises and for net debt to decline materially post-close; the buy_price above assumes the divestiture completes roughly as guided.
Teleflex screens clean (US-domiciled medical device maker, no China/cannabis/crypto/shell/going-concern flags). Owner earnings (CFO from continuing operations less capex less SBC, all restated to the latest-filed FY2025 10-K basis to strip out the businesses now held for sale) were volatile over FY2014-2025: $4.53/sh (2014) rising to a COVID-driven peak of $11.76/sh (2021), then reverting to $5.00 (2022), $2.80 (2023), $3.94 (2024) and turning slightly negative, -$0.54/sh (2025), as the company absorbed ~$67M of cash separation costs tied to its 'Strategic Divestitures' (selling the Acute Care and Interventional Urology businesses, now discontinued operations, alongside $1.28B of non-cash goodwill/asset impairments and a valuation allowance). Because 2025 is a one-off transition year, base case starts from a normalized $5.00/sh owner earnings, grows 4%/yr for 10 years (below the pre-COVID trend, moderated for reversion to mean) at a 9.5% discount rate with 2.5% terminal growth. Bear case starts from the 2023 trough level ($3.50/sh) and assumes continued -1%/yr erosion (integration disruption, tariff/reimbursement pressure) at an 11.5% discount rate; bull assumes a successful pure-play transformation with margin expansion back toward the 2016-2021 growth trajectory (7%/yr) at 8.5%. All three scenarios are converted to per-share operating value and then net cash/(debt) is added: TFX carries ~$2.64B of total debt against only ~$379M cash (FY2025), i.e. roughly -$50.6/sh net debt on 44.7M diluted shares - large relative to the depressed owner-earnings base. That leverage is what compresses bear case to essentially zero (computed value was negative before flooring at $0): in a genuine stress scenario the debt load would consume nearly all of the conservatively-valued operating earnings power. Base works out to ~$31/sh and bull to ~$115/sh - a very wide spread reflecting real uncertainty around whether the divestiture completes cleanly and deleverages the balance sheet as planned. Given that width and the leverage risk, buy_price is anchored well below base (roughly a 48% discount, closer to the bear case than a typical 30% haircut) rather than a flat discount off base. Data caveat: XBRL cash-flow/capex/SBC tags for TFX use NetCashProvidedByUsedInOperatingActivitiesContinuingOperations (tag 1397) rather than the total-company tag (72), which was empty for this filer; all figures dedupe to the most-recently-filed accession (FY2025 10-K, filed 2026-02-27) so prior years reflect the current discontinued-operations presentation.
