Smart Sand mines and processes Northern White frac sand at three mines (Oakdale and Blair in Wisconsin, Ottawa in Illinois), ships it by rail to oil and gas producers and service companies, and also rents wellsite storage equipment (SmartSystems) and runs in-basin transloading terminals in North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Oklahoma. Sales are booked mostly in U.S. shale basins, with some in Canada and Mexico. Sand is sold under short and long take-or-pay contracts and on the spot market, and management says customers increasingly prefer spot and short-term terms. Volume sold has grown from 4.5 million tons in 2023 to 5.4 million tons in 2025, but profit per ton has slipped from $14.85 to $11.96 as logistics and mining costs rose. How we measure earnings: we start from operating cash flow, remove swings in receivables, inventory, deferred revenue and payables, subtract stock compensation as a real cost, and subtract only the capital spending needed to keep the mines and equipment running (spending tied to sales growth is excluded). Working-capital swings are large at this company, for example a $41.8 million cash inflow in 2021 and a $34.8 million outflow in 2019, so single years mislead. Per share, this measure was $(0.70) in 2018 and $1.34 in 2019 (the 2018 mine buildout and the 2019 collection of receivables), $0.36 in 2020, $(0.55) in 2021, $0.53 in 2022, $0.29 in 2023, $0.71 in 2024 and $0.43 in 2025. We anchor on $0.43 per share, the median of 2023 to 2025, the years after the Blair mine opened and the current contract mix was in place. We exclude 2018 to 2022 as the buildout, pandemic collapse and rebuild years, and treat 2022 as flattering because our capex formula assigned it no maintenance spending. Owner earnings fell about 40% in 2025 versus 2024; year one of our base case assumes no growth, so there is no reversal of that decline to explain. Base case, $5.50 per share: earnings stay at $0.43 per share for 25 years and then stop. We give no credit for growth. The evidence for the level is the mines: estimated reserve lives of about 71 years at Oakdale, 149 at Ottawa and 67 at Blair, rail access to all Class I railroads in the U.S. and Canada, and capacity of about 10 million tons a year against 5.4 million sold. We do not credit volume growth, share gains, or the newer wellsite and industrial-sand businesses, because none has yet shown steady, repeatable earnings growth; sand prices and margins have moved down as volumes rose. Bear case, $1.46 per share: profit per ton continues the 2023 to 2025 decline and earnings drop to $0.15 per share for 15 years before ending. EQT Corporation alone was 27.7% of 2025 revenue (31.9% in 2024, 30.2% in 2023), and customers are reluctant to sign long take-or-pay contracts, so pricing and volume are exposed. Balance-sheet debt is small (about $13 million of debt against $22.6 million of cash and an undrawn $30 million credit line at year-end 2025), so leverage does not drive this case; industry pricing and customer concentration do. We do not add or subtract cash or debt separately. Bull case, $9.20 per share: earnings return to the $0.72 per share achieved in 2024 and hold for 25 years. The lever is the company's own: the Dennison, Ohio terminal expansion was completed in September 2025 and volume is well below mine capacity, so 2024's per-ton economics on higher tonnage is reachable without any new asset. We do not assume higher sand prices or a drilling recovery. What could make this wrong: the 2025 cash flow included a $9.8 million rise in customer deferred revenue that we removed from earnings, and it may not recur; a loss or repricing of EQT volumes would hit the base case directly; and shorter contract terms leave less visibility than the mine lives suggest. We tested the base level against 2025 alone: measured this way the business earned $17.0 million, or $0.43 per share, so the anchor is not propped up by a single strong year.
