Summit Therapeutics Inc. (SMMT) stock intrinsic value fair value estimate & owner earnings analysis

Margin of safety$0.00 ComplexityHigh Updated
Business condition attached to the margin of safety An approved product generating positive owner earnings (revenue exceeding operating costs, with stock-based compensation counted as a cost) for at least a couple of years.
Summit Therapeutics is a clinical-stage biotechnology company with no product revenue. Its business is ivonescimab, a cancer antibody licensed from Akeso in December 2022 for the United States and other licensed territories. The company paid $515 million upfront ($500 million in 2023, $15 million in 2024) and owes Akeso up to $4.56 billion more in milestones: up to $1.05 billion on regulatory events and up to $3.51 billion on sales, plus low double-digit royalties on net sales. What has been earned so far: none. On our measure of owner earnings (cash from operations, less working-capital swings, less stock-based compensation, less maintenance capital spending), every year from 2020 to 2025 is negative: roughly minus $0.72, $0.93, $0.28, $0.15, $0.27 and $1.41 per share. In 2025 cash used in operations was $323 million and stock compensation was a further $732 million, which we count as a real cost. There is no earnings level to anchor on. What is pending: the FDA accepted the company's application in January 2026 for ivonescimab plus chemotherapy in EGFR-mutant non-small cell lung cancer after prior treatment, with a decision date of November 14, 2026. The company itself notes the pivotal study did not show a statistically significant overall survival benefit. A larger first-line lung cancer trial (HARMONi-3) is still enrolling, with results not before late 2026 to 2027. An approval, a label, sales, or a positive trial result have not yet happened, so under our approach none can be credited. All three cases are therefore valued at $0 per share. That is not a claim the shares are worthless. It says nothing that exists today, whether contracted, sold or already earned, supports a positive cash-flow value. Bear: a rejection or restrictive label, continued cash burn, and further share issuance (the company states it has no committed external funding and needs substantial additional capital). Base and bull: nothing evidenced yet produces owner earnings, so both are $0 until approval and demonstrated sales exist. Any milestone payments to Akeso would come on top of an already negative cash stream. The company had $225 million of cash at year-end 2025 against a 2025 operating cash burn of $323 million, and its filing carries no going-concern warning; the risk is dilution. What would make this wrong: a decision in November 2026 approving ivonescimab, followed by sales large enough to cover the company's costs. The estimate would be revisited once that shows up in reported results. We did not consider the share price in this valuation.
