Business condition attached to the margin of safety A binding commercial or royalty agreement with an automaker or PowerCo that specifies battery volumes or pricing (moving beyond the current technology-transfer/licensing collaboration), which would let real revenue enter this valuation for the first time.
QuantumScape is developing solid-state lithium-metal battery cells for electric vehicles. The company has not yet generated any revenue; it remains in the prototype and pilot-production stage of its first planned product, the QSE-5 cell. Its most important commercial relationship is a technology collaboration with PowerCo, Volkswagen's battery arm, aimed at eventually industrializing that cell for mass production. In July 2025 that agreement was amended, and PowerCo agreed to contribute up to $130.7 million over the following two years toward a joint technology-transfer project, contingent on the scale-up team meeting a series of technical milestones. Because no supply agreement with committed volumes or pricing exists yet, this analysis does not attempt to price a future stream of battery sales -- nothing in the filings names what that revenue would be or when it would start, and building a value on a hoped-for launch would not be valuing the business as it exists today. Instead, each case values what can actually be measured: the cash on hand, and the pace at which the company is spending it. QuantumScape has never earned a profit and continues to fund its research and pilot manufacturing entirely from its cash balance and from stock sales -- $288 million raised in 2023, $129 million in 2024, and $264 million in 2025. Cash spent on operations each year has stayed in a fairly narrow $218-275 million band since 2022, but because the company also grants substantial stock-based compensation (a real cost to shareholders through dilution, even though it isn't a cash cost), the fuller economic loss per share has actually been narrowing: from about $0.88 in 2023, to $0.83 in 2024, to $0.64 in 2025 -- a 22% improvement in the most recent year, a pace that continued into the first half of 2026. That improvement traces mainly to declining stock-based compensation as early award grants vest out, and to falling capital spending as the company's pilot production line (nicknamed Raptor) nears completion. As of June 30, 2026, the company held about $859 million in cash and short-term investments against minimal debt (a small equipment finance-lease balance), or roughly $1.35 per share net of that lease. Three cases were built: - Bear: the loss-narrowing trend stalls and cash spending holds near its worst recent pace (about $0.85 of value consumed per share each year) for a decade, and the PowerCo milestone payments are not achieved. - Base: the recent, multi-year narrowing trend continues, but at a slower pace than the most recent year's 22% improvement, tapering to a stabilized run-rate after about five years; roughly half of the PowerCo milestone funding is credited, in the first two years. - Bull: the narrowing trend continues closer to its recent pace for a few more years before leveling off at a materially better run-rate, and the full $130.7 million PowerCo contribution is realized. None of the three cases assumes the company begins selling batteries, because that has not yet been contracted or dated in the filings; a real commercial or royalty agreement, if signed, would represent value not captured here. Discounting each case's ongoing cash consumption at 6% over ten years and adding today's net cash produces a bear case of about $(4.91) per share, a base case of about $(1.89), and a bull case of about $(0.83). On the evidence in the filings alone -- cash on hand plus a still-unprofitable, pre-revenue research program with no committed customer contract -- the business is worth less than nothing per share in every case modeled here; there is no revenue yet to offset the ongoing spending. That does not mean the shares have no value -- the QSE-5 program could succeed commercially with Volkswagen/PowerCo or another automaker, a real possibility this analysis is not equipped to size from the filings alone. It means the currently demonstrated business, on its own, does not yet clear that bar. Given that, the margin-of-safety price sits meaningfully below the $1.35 per share of net cash on the balance sheet today. This analysis will be revisited once QuantumScape signs a binding commercial agreement, with an automaker or PowerCo, that specifies volumes or pricing, at which point real revenue could enter this analysis for the first time. One check performed before finalizing: the company's other contractual purchase obligations (materials and services) total only a few million dollars a year through 2028, which rules out a hidden near-term cash call beyond the spending already reflected above.

Chart analysis
QuantumScape's chart is a textbook high-beta, sentiment-driven pattern. Shares spiked to an all-time high near $130 shortly after the November 2020 SPAC merger, then spent most of 2021-2023 in a steep, volatile downtrend as early hype gave way to the reality of a pre-revenue, multi-year development timeline, eventually bottoming in the single digits. Since then the chart has shown sharp, news-driven rallies -- often tied to Volkswagen/PowerCo collaboration updates or technical milestones -- followed by extended consolidation or drift, rather than a smooth trend.
