Douglas Dynamics is North America's leading maker of snow and ice control equipment for light and heavy trucks. It runs two segments. Work Truck Attachments ($295.7M of 2025 sales) sells snowplows, salt and sand spreaders and parts under the WESTERN, FISHER, SNOWEX and BRINEXTREME brands through a long-established dealer network across the snow belt of the United States and every province of Canada, and since November 2025 also truck-mounted service cranes and dump hoists under the VENCO and VENTURO brands. Work Truck Solutions ($360.3M of 2025 sales) upfits truck chassis for municipalities and commercial fleets through HENDERSON and DEJANA. Total 2025 sales were $656.1M. What drives the business is snowfall. Plows and spreaders wear out faster, and contractors replace them sooner, after heavy winters; after light winters dealers carry leftover stock and buy less. The company's own records show the ten snow seasons ending March 2025 were the lowest rolling decade of snowfall since 1980 (averaging 2,623 inches across its tracked cities versus a 2,967-inch long-run average), the 2023-24 season was 38% below average, and 2024-25 was the seventh straight season below the ten-year average. That matters for reading the numbers below: the last decade was not a lucky stretch. How we measured earnings. We use owner earnings: operating cash flow, with year-to-year swings in receivables, inventories, payables and accrued costs removed, less stock compensation (treated as a real cost) and the capital spending needed to keep the business running. Capital needs are light, about 2% of sales. We deliberately left lease payments and pension contributions inside the cost base, which matters here because the company sold and leased back six facilities in 2024 for $64.2M; that raised rent permanently, and the rent is charged against earnings. The $42.3M book gain on that sale is excluded, while the cash tax on it did reduce 2024. The $127.9M goodwill write-down in 2020 was a non-cash charge on the earlier Dejana purchase and does not reduce owner earnings. Per diluted share, owner earnings were $2.51 (2016), $2.38, $2.45, $2.87, $1.40 (2020, COVID and write-down year), $2.10, $1.89, $1.81, $1.03 (2024, very poor snow and the sale-leaseback tax) and $2.55 (2025). We anchor on the median of 2016 to 2025, $2.24 per share. That window starts with the business in its current two-segment form after the Dejana acquisition and covers a full run of good and bad winters. We did not anchor on the rebound in 2025 or on the first half of 2026 (sales up 14% to $352.4M, operating income up 13% to $45.4M), because those reflect weather that can reverse. Owner earnings rose 148% in 2025 as the business came off the 2024 low; we assume only 1% growth for the year ahead. Base case, about $40 per share. Earnings start at $2.24 and grow 1% a year for ten years, then hold flat in dollar terms indefinitely. The growth figure is deliberately low. Sales grew about 4.7% a year from 2016 to 2025 on price increases and larger municipal volumes, but owner earnings per share did not grow over the decade, held back by weak winters, rising steel and freight costs (including tariffs, which the company says materially hurt 2024 and 2025 profits), the new rent and a slightly higher share count. Holding earnings flat after year ten rests on something already visible: the brands have led their market for decades, and plows need replacing whenever it snows. We added no value for a return to average snowfall, because a better weather cycle is not something we can point to in advance. Bear case, about $22 per share. Earnings start at $1.75, near the 2022 to 2024 level, and fall 1% a year for ten years as the record-low snowfall decade continues, steel and tariff costs are only partly passed on, and the Venco Venturo purchase fails to meet the company's own targets, a risk it names in its filing. Earnings then hold flat for twenty more years and are given no value after that. Debt adds to the downside: about $151M of term debt maturing in March 2030, plus lease obligations that rose to $89.8M by June 2026. The company carried this comfortably through the 2024 low, but in a run of snowless winters it would limit the dividend, currently about $1.18 per share a year and paying out most of owner earnings. Bull case, about $54 per share. Earnings start at $2.55, the 2025 level (itself earned in a winter below the ten-year average), and grow 3% a year for ten years as the business's own levers work: continued price increases, the higher Work Truck Solutions throughput reported in 2025, and a full year of cranes and hoists from Venco Venturo. After that, earnings hold flat. What would make this wrong: snowfall in the Midwest and Northeast declining for good rather than moving in cycles; a loss of the chassis supply from truck makers that Work Truck Solutions depends on (shortages hurt it in 2023 and 2024); or steel costs the company cannot pass through. Because of the weather, the leverage and the fact that earnings per share have not grown in ten years, the estimate calls for a wide margin of safety: the margin-of-safety price is about $26 per share, a little above the bear case and roughly one-third below the base case.
