Business condition attached to the margin of safety Confirmation that Universal Display has renewed or extended its OLED license and materials-supply relationship with LG Display, whose disclosed term ran only through the end of 2025 with no renewal stated as of the FY2025 10-K; also watch for early signals on the Samsung Display license/extension-option status ahead of its scheduled 2027 expiration.
Universal Display licenses its OLED (organic light-emitting diode) display technology and sells the phosphorescent emitter materials that make those displays work, primarily to Samsung Display, LG Display, and a growing group of Chinese panel makers (BOE, China Star, Visionox, and Tianma) who build the technology into smartphones, TVs, laptops and other screens. A note on the 'patent cliff' that might come to mind with a licensing business like this: Universal Display's original, most fundamental phosphorescent-OLED patents already expired years ago - in the US in 2017 and 2019, and abroad in 2018 and 2020. Revenue and cash generation have both roughly tripled since then, because the company's moat turned out not to rest on a single patent family. It rests on a large and continually renewed portfolio of newer patents (more than 7,000 issued and pending), hard-to-replicate manufacturing know-how for the emitter chemistry itself, and multi-year license and materials-supply contracts with each major panel maker. That history is reassuring, but it doesn't make the business risk-free - it relocates the risk from 'when do the patents expire' to 'will each major customer keep renewing its contract, and on what terms.' That is the central judgment behind this valuation. Samsung Display alone is about 43% of revenue, and its current license and material-purchase agreements run through the end of 2027, with a two-year extension option that could carry them to 2029. LG Display, roughly a fifth of revenue, has an agreement the company's own filing describes as extended only 'through the end of 2025,' with no renewal yet disclosed as of this filing. Universal Display has a strong track record of renewing these relationships - with Samsung in 2018 and again in 2022, with LG for over 15 years - and it keeps adding new licensees (BOE in 2023, Visionox in 2024, Tianma in 2025), which diversifies the customer base over time. But each renewal is a real negotiation with no guarantee that future terms match today's. We built owner earnings (operating cash flow, less the swing in working capital, less stock-based compensation, less the capital spending needed just to maintain the business, as opposed to grow it) for the last ten years and used the median of the last five (2021-2025, which spans a cash-flow peak in 2022 and a smartphone-panel destocking trough in 2023) as the normalized starting point: about $3.69 per share. That sits below the $4.26 the company actually earned in 2025, deliberately, so the valuation isn't anchored to an unusually strong recent year. Our base case assumes continued but moderating growth - high single digits over the next couple of years as newer license relationships ramp and OLED adoption in laptops and monitors continues, cooling to roughly 3% a year by year ten as the smartphone and TV OLED markets mature. For the years beyond the ten-year forecast, we did not assume the license economics continue forever. Instead we assumed today's earnings power holds for a few more years and then fades over the following decade toward a lower, more materials-centric level, on the view that some of today's licensing edge narrows as customers such as Samsung and LG build out their own OLED patent estates (both are named in the filing as active patent filers in this field), even as the harder-to-replicate materials-supply relationships persist longer. That produces a base-case value of about $53 per share. Our bear case assumes the Samsung Display renewal around 2027-2029 lands on meaningfully weaker terms, that the LG Display relationship also renews on reduced terms or with disruption, and that growth stalls or mildly reverses for several years before the business stabilizes at a lower, more materials-weighted level. That produces a value of about $32 per share. Our bull case assumes the Samsung and LG renewals go smoothly, OLED continues taking share in newer categories such as laptops, monitors and automotive displays faster than the base case expects, and the company's continuing pace of new patent filings sustains a broad royalty base for longer. That produces a value of about $74 per share. Given how much of the near-term outlook turns on two dated customer contracts, we used a wider-than-typical margin of safety, putting the margin-of-safety price at roughly $40 per share. The upper end of that range also assumes the Samsung and, especially, the LG Display relationships - whose currently disclosed term runs only through the end of 2025 - are confirmed as renewed or replaced. One item we could not fully reconcile from the structured filing data: the company does not report a single 'change in working capital' line in the data we used, so we derived it as the balancing figure between cash flow and net income plus non-cash charges. That gets to the same owner-earnings answer, but it means we could not independently cross-check working-capital swings against balance-sheet detail line by line; nothing in the filings suggested any problem with the pattern.
