Business condition attached to the margin of safety Micron holds a net cash or near-net-cash balance sheet, and has deferred or cancelled a meaningful portion of the announced Idaho and New York fab buildout rather than funding a memory downcycle with heavy new borrowing against uncancellable multi-year construction commitments.
Micron is a commodity memory manufacturer whose economics swing more violently than almost any large business. Over the ten years through fiscal 2025, cash from operations less all capital spending and stock compensation totalled just $9.5 billion - about $950 million a year, under a dollar per share - because the company reinvested $91.4 billion in plant against $59.9 billion of depreciation. That $31.6 billion gap was new capacity, not the cost of standing still, so only depreciation is charged as maintenance; on that basis normalized earnings averaged $4.1 billion a year, or $3.64 per share, and that is the historical earning power relied on here. The volatility is the whole story: fiscal 2023 produced a negative 9% gross margin and consumed $6.7 billion of cash, while the nine months to May 2026 produced a 77% gross margin and generated $25 billion. Federal manufacturing grants do not flatter operating cash flow - they are recorded separately as investing inflows, $2.0 billion in fiscal 2025 - though they did reduce reported operating costs by $588 million. The conservative case assumes the current boom leaves nothing durable and Micron reverts to $4.5 billion of normalized earnings, growing 2%, discounted at 12%: about $63 a share. The central case assumes AI demand and a three-supplier structure lift mid-cycle earnings to roughly $12 billion, growing 4% at a 10% discount: about $184. The optimistic case, near $21 billion growing 5.5% at 8.5%, reaches roughly $430. Each includes about $24 a share of net cash. The margin-of-safety price is anchored on the downside rather than the central case because the low end here can genuinely deepen: memory has no pricing power in oversupply, rivals are expanding into the largest price spike in the industry's history, and Micron is committing to a multi-fab buildout whose depreciation arrives whatever prices do. Confidence in the downside figure is roughly 80%, so the margin-of-safety price sits about a third below it.
