MarketWise publishes investment research and newsletter subscriptions for individual investors, sold online under brands such as Stansberry Research, Chaikin Analytics, Brownstone Research, InvestorPlace, Altimetry and TradeSmith. Nearly all sales are to U.S. retail investors, generated by direct-response marketing that turns free email readers into paying subscribers and then offers existing subscribers higher-priced products and software tools. The company has no debt. How the money actually works. Subscribers pay up front, often for multi-year or lifetime memberships, but the company recognizes that revenue in its accounts gradually, over as long as five years. Reported revenue and profit therefore lag the cash by years. That matters a great deal here. Sales (billings) surged in 2020-2021 and then fell sharply: $382 million in 2023, $239 million in 2024 (when the Legacy Research brands were shut down) and $271 million in 2025. The healthy reported profits of 2022-2025 ($54-101 million a year) were largely the slow recognition of cash collected during the boom, not new cash. From 2023 through mid-2026 the company reported roughly $270 million of net income but generated only about $106 million of operating cash flow. We therefore measure earning power from what the business actually collects and spends each year - billings less cash operating costs, after stock-based pay and small software development spending - rather than from reported profit. On that basis the business earned about $45 million before tax in 2022, $31 million in 2023, $4 million in 2024 (the wind-down year) and $30 million in 2025. We use about $30 million a year before tax as the normal level. Ownership structure and taxes. The publicly traded company owns only about 17% of the operating business; founders and early owners hold the rest through units that can be exchanged one-for-one for public shares. The operating business pays almost no corporate income tax itself and instead sends its owners cash to pay their own taxes (about $50 million in 2025). To put every share on an equal footing we value the whole business across all 15.65 million shares and units and charge a normal corporate tax rate of 26% on its earnings. That gives normal after-tax owner earnings of about $1.44 per share. Separately, roughly $200 million of cash already collected from subscribers has not yet been taxed; the tax on it (about $51 million at corporate rates) comes due as that revenue is recognized, and we subtract it in each case according to how soon that case implies it is paid. Recent results. In the first half of 2026 the company sharply increased marketing to push its software-based products. It worked on sales: billings rose about 32% to $173 million and paid subscribers grew to 400,000 from 374,000 at the end of 2025. But the extra spending consumed nearly all of the extra cash - on our measure the business earned only about $3 million in the first half, versus about $19 million a year earlier - and it reported a net loss. Management says it will pull back marketing in the second half. In April the company also paid $12.2 million to settle a dispute with its former chief executive, which included buying back about 3% of the shares. Cash fell from $70 million at the end of 2025 to $33 million at June 30 after tax payments to owners, dividends and that settlement; payouts are currently running ahead of what the business earns. Bear case (about $6.70 per share). The heavier 2026 marketing fails to earn back its cost and subscriber losses resume, as they did when paid subscribers fell from about 737,000 in 2023 to 374,000 in 2025 with monthly churn of 2.4-3.7%. Earnings run about $12 million a year before tax for three years (between the 2024 low and the most recent twelve months), recover only to about $22 million, and fade to nothing over years 11-20. A shrinking business also pays the tax on its untaxed deferred revenue sooner. The business is worth about $133 million; adding about $15 million of cash beyond operating needs (net of a small remaining tax-sharing obligation) and subtracting about $44 million of tax on deferred revenue leaves about $105 million. Base case (about $16.75 per share). Year one earns about $22 million before tax while the 2026 spending is absorbed, then the normal level of about $30 million continues for the following 14 years. That persistence rests on a direct-marketing engine that has kept replacing lapsing subscribers with new products since Stansberry Research was founded in 1999, through the 2008 and 2022 downturns. No growth is credited: the 2026 billings jump is one half-year, bought with heavy spending. Earnings then fade to zero over years 16-30, because today's subscriber base is roughly half its 2023 size and nothing in the filings shows it can be rebuilt permanently. Business value about $262 million, plus $15 million of surplus cash, less about $14 million of tax on deferred revenue, is about $262 million. Bull case (about $25.10 per share). The software products keep selling at the first-half 2026 pace while marketing spending is moderated, so billings hold around $330 million at 2025's cash margin of roughly 11% - about $40 million a year before tax, similar to what the business earned in 2019-2022. That level lasts 20 years before fading over the next 15. Business value about $388 million, plus $15 million of cash, less about $10 million of deferred-revenue tax, is about $393 million. Change from our previous estimate. Our earlier estimate (bear $52, base $76, bull $123) measured earnings from reported profit during years when that profit mostly reflected cash collected in 2020-2021, and it did not charge corporate tax on the roughly 83% of earnings that flows to the unit holders. Correcting both, and reflecting the first-half 2026 loss, lowers our estimate by about three-quarters. We also now count capitalized software development as a capital cost. Margin-of-safety price. The margin-of-safety price is about $9.50, roughly 43% below the base case, reflecting the business's dependence on retail-investor enthusiasm, a subscriber base that halved in two years, payouts currently exceeding earnings, and control by the founding owners. What would make this wrong. If the 2026 customer-acquisition spending produces renewals and upgrades at 2019-2022 rates, earnings could return to $40-60 million a year, well above our base case. On the downside, the business relies on the publisher's exemption from investment-adviser registration; any narrowing of that exemption would change the model fundamentally. The size of the untaxed deferred revenue is based on the company's own estimate of the cash it holds against future tax payments ($98 million at the end of 2025), which we could not verify independently.

Chart analysis
The long-term chart is a steep, multi-year downtrend: from its 2021 market debut the stock lost close to 90% of its value over five years and needed a 1-for-20 reverse split in April 2025. Since then the picture has changed to base-building. Over the past year the shares are up roughly 20%, trading in a range of about $13.50 to $22.80 and recently sitting in the upper half of that range near $20, with a pattern of higher lows. A chartist would read this as an early recovery base inside a longer-term downtrend, with resistance near the $23 52-week high and support in the mid-teens.
