Lamb Weston is the number one supplier of value-added frozen potato products in North America, mostly french fries, and sells to a diverse mix of channels and customers in over 100 countries. It runs 25 production plants, 14 of them in the U.S. Its largest customer, McDonald's, is about 15% of sales, and its ten largest customers are about half of sales. Fiscal 2026 (ended May 31, 2026) sales were $6.61 billion, of which the U.S. was $4.29 billion. What we measured. We value the business on owner earnings: operating cash flow, adjusted to remove swings in working capital, less stock compensation, less the capital spending needed just to keep plants running. Growth spending is separated from maintenance spending using the company's own long-run spending-to-sales ratio. On this basis owner earnings per share were $1.67 (fiscal 2018), $2.58, $2.86, $2.31, $1.57, $1.55, $1.29, $0.79 (fiscal 2025) and $2.69 (fiscal 2026). The dip in fiscal 2023 to 2025 is the multi-year plant build-out (capital spending peaked at $929.5 million in fiscal 2024, against $147.2 million in fiscal 2021). The company says that program is now finished, including the new Argentina plant, and it guides fiscal 2027 capital spending to $380 to $410 million. Because the formula treats spending as maintenance whenever sales are flat or falling, those three years are understated, so we leave them out and use the median of fiscal 2018 to 2022 and fiscal 2026, which is $2.45 per share. Fiscal 2026 also included a 53rd week worth $127.1 million of sales and about $133 million of cash released from working capital; that release is excluded from our figures. As a cross-check on level, the company's fiscal 2027 operating cash flow guidance of $750 to $800 million, less roughly $46 million of stock compensation and about $395 million of capital spending, points to roughly $2.40 per share on the 137.5 million shares outstanding; we used it only as a check and not to set the level. What is going wrong. Fiscal 2026 volume rose 7%, but price and mix fell 6% because the company gave price and trade support and won lower-priced business. Management expects another low single-digit price and mix decline in fiscal 2027, offset by low single-digit volume growth, so sales are guided flat to slightly up. The International segment's adjusted EBITDA (the company's own segment profit measure) fell 55%; in Europe, Middle East and Africa the company cited increased competition, softer demand and disrupted Middle East shipments. The company carries $3.93 billion of debt and financing obligations and recorded $180.5 million of net interest expense in fiscal 2026. It is consolidating plants in Argentina and Australia and closing its plant in Broekhuizenvorst, the Netherlands; the Netherlands closure carries $80 to $110 million of charges, mostly in fiscal 2027, at least 20% of it in cash. Its Cost Savings Program exceeded its first-year target of $100 million of savings, and those savings were realized during fiscal 2026. Base case, $40.8 per share. Owner earnings stay flat at $2.45 per share indefinitely. Year one is below the fiscal 2026 figure of $2.69 (fiscal 2026 rose sharply from fiscal 2025 mainly because capital spending fell, so that trailing growth rate is not a fair guide). We give no credit for further growth: volume gains from the new capacity are so far being offset by lower pricing, and we do not count share gains, new products or additional cost savings that have not yet shown up in earnings. What persists is the company's established position as the number one supplier of a staple menu item, with customer relationships the company describes as deep and long-standing. The $2.45 level was reached or exceeded in three of the nine years measured (fiscal 2019, 2020 and 2026) and is the median of the chosen window. Discounted at 6%, a flat $2.45 stream is worth about $40.8. Bear case, $25.2 per share. Price and mix erosion continues beyond what the company guides and is only partly offset by savings. Owner earnings fall to $2.20 in year one, $1.80 in year two and settle at $1.45 per share, below every non-expansion year in our record (the low was $1.57 in fiscal 2022), with no recovery. The named pressures are the disclosed price and mix decline, the weak International segment, customer concentration, and interest costs on $3.93 billion of debt. Bull case, $48.2 per share. The savings program and cost per pound improvements already achieved hold while pricing stabilizes, so owner earnings return to levels the company has already reached: $2.70 in year one, then $2.90 per share (fiscal 2020 was $2.86), held flat. This uses no new products or new markets. What could make this wrong. Our earnings level rests on capital spending staying near $395 million, including environmental spending (about $90 million of wastewater projects in fiscal 2026). If that spending has to stay higher, or pricing falls faster than costs, the level is too high. If price and mix stabilise sooner, it is too low. We assume no benefit from the company's ongoing strategic work. Margin-of-safety price: $24. That is just below our bear case, given the leverage and falling prices, and about 41% below the base case.
