Business condition attached to the margin of safety A disclosed automotive OEM design win (production selection with a named program), or at least two consecutive quarters of growing non-automotive revenue with disclosed order or unit volumes.
AEye designs lidar (light detection and ranging) sensors and perception software aimed at autonomous vehicles, advanced driver-assistance systems, and non-automotive uses such as robotics and industrial sensing. The company went public through a merger with a special-purpose acquisition company in August 2021 and has not yet turned a meaningful commercial corner: revenue has been under $250,000 in each of the last two fiscal years, spread across customers in the United States, Europe and Asia, and the company has never announced that one of its lidar products has been selected for production in a vehicle program (what the industry calls a 'design win'). Its most important automotive relationship, a manufacturing and integration agreement with a subsidiary of Continental AG, was discontinued by Continental at the end of 2023. What AEye does have is cash: roughly $68 million of cash and investments net of liabilities as of its most recent balance sheet (June 30, 2026), built up mainly by selling new shares. In 2025 alone the company raised about $91 million by selling stock into the market, which is the reason share count nearly tripled that year. That is the central tension in this stock: a well-funded balance sheet paired with a product business that, on the evidence available today, has not demonstrated it can generate revenue anywhere near its cost structure. Because there is no signed production contract, backlog, or demonstrated revenue growth to point to, we have not credited any value in our cases to a future automotive win or commercial breakthrough - if and when that evidence appears, the picture would need to be revisited. Instead, each case values the company as what the filings actually show: a cash balance being spent down at a demonstrable rate, with the spending pace as the swing factor. Operating cash outflow ran about $28 million in fiscal 2025 and has continued at a similar pace (slightly higher, if anything) through the first half of fiscal 2026 - the multi-year improvement in the cash burn seen from 2022 through 2024 has leveled off rather than continued. In the bear case, spending continues at that pace with no offsetting revenue; the current cash and investments are exhausted in a little over two years, and with nothing else supporting value at that point, the shares are worth nothing. In the base case, spending holds at the fiscal-2025 pace; discounting the resulting spend-down at a 6% rate leaves a thin residual value, on the order of $0.13 per share. In the bull case, the company repeats the cost discipline it already demonstrated between 2022 and 2024 - stock-based compensation fell from $24 million to $9 million and capital spending fell from $4.2 million to well under $1 million over that stretch - trimming annual cash use to roughly $20 million and stretching the runway past three years, worth on the order of $0.17 per share. None of the three cases assumes a design win, revenue growth, or new financing; they differ only in how fast existing cash is used up. The company carries no meaningful debt - a small promissory note and a small convertible note, together a few million dollars, are minor next to the cash position - so net cash sits almost entirely on the plus side of the ledger. The flip side is dilution: the company has funded its losses primarily by selling new shares rather than borrowing, and further share sales before the current cash runs out appear likely given the pattern of the last two years. That dilution risk is already reflected in using the current, most-recently-reported share count for these per-share figures rather than an earlier, smaller count. We found no indication of Chinese ownership or operations, no cannabis or cryptocurrency exposure, and no shell-company characteristics. The company had a period of Nasdaq minimum-bid-price non-compliance in 2025 but regained compliance in July 2025 and Nasdaq closed the matter; there is no current listing issue. Management stated in its most recent annual report that it has sufficient resources to fund operations for the next twelve months. Given how thin the case for value is once speculative upside is set aside, the margin-of-safety price is set at a very large discount to reflect the real possibility of a full loss.

OE = CFO - SBC - maintenance capex. CFO=$(71,649)K; SBC=$23,959K; capex=$4,200K (revenue rose 2021->2022 from $3,007K to $3,647K, but capex is a trivial dollar amount at this company's scale so no growth-capex split was applied; maintenance capex = total capex, judgment call). 2021 -$18.36 ▼
OE = CFO - SBC - maintenance capex, on a post-1-for-30-reverse-split share basis (AEye effected the split 12/26/2023; pre-split shares divided by 30 for comparability with post-split years). Window 2021-2025 chosen because AEye began as a public reporting entity via SPAC merger (Aug 2021); pre-merger CIK history (2019-2020) reflects the blank-check shell, not the operating lidar business, and is excluded. CFO=$(55,703)K; SBC=$10,018K; capex=$1,021K; revenue rose 2020->2021 but capex is a trivial dollar amount at this company's scale, so no growth-capex split was applied (maintenance capex = total capex, judgment call). OE=$(66,742)K. Weighted avg diluted shares as reported =109,055,894; divided by 30 = 3,635,196 split-adjusted shares. OE/sh=$(18.36). Working-capital line items (AR/inventory/AP) were a few million dollars, small relative to the $55.7M CFO burn; treated as immaterial to the per-share result (judgment call, consistent with the <5% reconciliation gap found for FY2025). Source: FY2021 10-K, accession 0001818644-22-000008.

Chart analysis
LIDR's chart is a classic post-SPAC de-rating pattern: a sharp decline from the 2021 listing highs down to sub-$1 levels by late 2023, which forced a 1-for-30 reverse stock split in December 2023 to regain Nasdaq compliance. Since the split, the stock has been extremely volatile and range-bound at low single-digit dollar levels, with sharp, short-lived spikes on news or sector sentiment (autonomous-vehicle and lidar-sector rallies) that have repeatedly faded back toward prior lows - a pattern a chartist would call a series of failed breakouts rather than a sustained uptrend. A technician would flag the heavy share-count growth (dilution) as a persistent overhang capping rallies, and would note the stock has made a series of lower highs since the 2023 split despite periodic speculative pops.
