Key Tronic is a contract electronics manufacturer, and its cash generation over the past decade tells a difficult story. Measured as operating cash flow less capital spending and stock compensation, the company consumed cash in most years: about $2.34 per share in fiscal 2021, $1.09 in 2022 and $1.95 in 2023, before turning positive at $0.95 in 2024 and $1.36 in 2025. That recent swing was not earned profit. The fiscal 2025 annual report attributes it to collecting $32 million of receivables faster and running inventory down as sales fell from $567 million to $468 million. Underneath, operating profit was only $0.6 million while interest cost $12.5 million, producing an $8.3 million loss, and the nine months through March 2026 showed sales down another 20 percent and an $11.1 million operating loss, although the January to March quarter recovered to roughly break even. Averaged over ten years operating profit runs about $6 to $8 million annually, and capital spending roughly matches depreciation, so there is little hidden earning power. Against that the balance sheet carries about $101 million of borrowings against $0.4 million of cash, plus roughly $36 million of lease obligations. In a pessimistic case, with margins stuck near recent lows, no growth and a 12 percent discount rate, the business is worth far less than its debt and nothing is left for shareholders. A middle case that restores mid-cycle operating profit near $7 million, grows it 2 percent and discounts at 9.5 percent values the business at roughly $92 million, still short of the debt, so the shares round to zero. Only an optimistic case, with sales recovering toward $520 million at an 8.5 percent gross margin discounted at 8.5 percent, produces about $7.85 per share. Because value here depends entirely on a turnaround that has not happened yet, the margin-of-safety price of about $2 applies only after debt falls sharply and profitability returns.
