Kronos Worldwide makes titanium dioxide (TiO2), the white pigment used in paints, plastics and paper, at plants in the United States, Germany, Belgium, Canada and Norway (including a Louisiana joint-venture plant it moved to full ownership in 2024). It sells into Europe (about 46% of 2025 sales by customer location), North America (about 38%, mostly the U.S.) and other markets (about 15%). TiO2 is a commodity chemical and the business is genuinely cyclical. Over the last decade owner earnings (cash the business generates for shareholders after the investment needed to keep running, stripped of accounting noise and one-time working-capital swings) ranged from roughly $2.14 per share in the 2017-18 pricing peak down to about -$0.68 and -$0.76 per share in the 2023 and 2025 troughs, with mid-cycle years (2019, 2021, 2022, 2024) clustering around $0.80-$0.86 per share. We used that ten-year cycle, not the weak trailing year, to set the normal earning power of the business at roughly $0.83 per share, because 2025 alone was depressed by heavy Chinese TiO2 export competition, weak European demand, and a one-time inventory drawdown that temporarily flattered reported cash flow while masking a weak underlying trading result. We did not assume the 2017-18 peak repeats: that period was a temporary industry-wide capacity crunch, and persistent low-cost Chinese sulfate-process supply since 2019 has kept a lid on pricing. We did build in one real, dated positive: a major European competitor (Venator) went bankrupt in 2025 and closed capacity, and other producers have curtailed output in China and Europe, which management says is already supporting European volumes; first-half 2026 revenue is running about 8% ahead of a year ago. That said, the recovery so far is uneven quarter to quarter, so we treated it as a gradual, multi-year normalization rather than an immediate snap-back. A second real change: in 2024 Kronos paid $157 million to buy out its partner's share of a jointly owned TiO2 plant, financed with new debt. Interest expense roughly tripled, from $17 million in 2023 to $53 million in 2025, and cash on hand fell from $195 million to $33 million over the same two years while the dividend was cut from $87 million to $23 million annually - a real sign management is prioritizing debt paydown over payouts. This leverage does not change the discount rate we use, but it does make the downside case worse, since the same weak pricing environment now has to cover a bigger interest bill. Putting this together: the bear case assumes Chinese oversupply and weak European demand persist, with the business generating little to no owner earnings for several years before settling around a permanently lower level - a repeat of what actually happened in 2023 and 2025, not a hypothetical worse outcome. The base case assumes a gradual, multi-year recovery toward the historical mid-cycle level of about $0.80-$0.85 per share as the recently announced capacity closures work through the market. The bull case assumes a return to the tighter conditions last seen in 2021, without assuming the unusual 2017-18 peak repeats. On these assumptions, discounted at a flat rate with no separate growth premium, the shares are worth roughly $3 in the bear case, $13 in the base case, and $20 in the bull case. Given the leverage and the fact that a real recovery is still unconfirmed rather than certain, the margin-of-safety price sits at a meaningful discount to our base-case estimate; the business's own results were still mixed in the first half of 2026, so the improvement has not yet continued for more than a single quarter.
