Hyliion Holdings Corp. (HYLN) stock intrinsic value fair value estimate & owner earnings analysis

Margin of safety$0.00 ComplexityAverage Updated
Business condition attached to the margin of safety KARNO Power Module sales or contracts that produce positive operating cash flow after stock compensation and equipment spending, rather than cost-reimbursed research revenue.
Hyliion Holdings develops the KARNO Power Module, a modular generator built around KARNO Core, a heat-powered linear generator whose technology originated in General Electric research. The company shifted its focus from truck powertrains to KARNO as a stand-alone power-generation product. Revenue was $3.5 million in 2025, $1.5 million in 2024 and $0.7 million in 2023. The company has received United States Navy (Office of Naval Research) research awards: up to $16 million in 2024, a Phase II award of up to $1.5 million in July 2025 (a cost-plus-fixed-fee contract), and two earlier awards of up to $2.4 million in total. These awards assess whether KARNO is suitable for Navy vessels and stationary power. How we measured earnings. We start from operating cash flow, remove swings in working capital, subtract stock compensation as a real cost, and subtract only the part of equipment spending needed to stay in business. On that basis the company had negative earnings in each of the seven years available. Per share the result was about -$0.13 in 2019, -$0.20 in 2020, -$0.54 in 2021, -$0.70 in 2022, -$0.72 in 2023, -$0.33 in 2024 and -$0.34 in 2025. Operating cash outflow was $46.5 million in 2025 against $56.7 million in 2024, while equipment spending rose to $23.7 million in 2025 from $16.5 million. A large 2020 gain from a change in the value of warrants and a $5.6 million inventory write-down in 2022 explain part of the difference between reported net income and cash flow in those years; we use cash flow. We could not fully reconcile the 2022 gap between the net loss and the cash outflow from the data available, but the valuation is built on cash flow so it does not depend on that gap. The three cases. Bear, base and bull are each worth $0 per share. Value here comes only from earning power that is contracted, demonstrated or the output of a repeated process. Hyliion has no positive owner earnings in any year and revenue of $3.5 million against $46.5 million of operating cash outflow. The Navy awards show the technology is being evaluated, but we found no contract or backlog that turns into surplus cash after the company's own spending. Plans to scale KARNO to utility-scale modules and other variants, and to win share against reciprocating engines, turbines and fuel cells, have not yet happened, so none of it is credited in any case. Any cash the company holds is not added to the value, because it is being spent on operations at this rate. What could prove this wrong. If KARNO Power Modules are sold to paying customers at prices that cover their full cost, or if research contracts begin generating cash beyond the company's spending, the earnings we value at zero would become positive. At least a couple of years of positive results would be needed before assigning value. Margin-of-safety price. With no earning power we can evidence, no margin-of-safety price can be set today. A margin-of-safety price becomes meaningful only once the business shows sustained positive cash generation after stock compensation and equipment spending.
