Harmony Biosciences sells WAKIX (pitolisant), a once-daily pill for excessive daytime sleepiness and cataplexy in narcolepsy, which today accounts for essentially all of the company's revenue (roughly $868 million in 2025, up from about $160 million in 2020). The company also runs a group of earlier-stage programs - extended formulations of pitolisant for idiopathic hypersomnia and Prader-Willi syndrome now in Phase 3 trials, plus a smaller pipeline of licensed-in compounds - but none of these has reached the market yet, and one of them (ZYN002 in Fragile X syndrome) was discontinued in 2025 after its Phase 3 study failed to support approval. The central fact shaping this business's value is a set of patent-litigation settlements, already signed, that fix the date generic competition can begin. Harmony sued six companies that filed for FDA approval of generic pitolisant, and each case has now settled: the generic makers may enter the market beginning in the second half of 2030 if Harmony secures an additional six months of pediatric market protection (which it is actively pursuing through an ongoing pediatric trial), or several months earlier if it does not. One filer's license begins as early as March 2030. In other words, WAKIX has a clear, dated runway of roughly four more years before it faces generic competition from at least six manufacturers at once - a crowded field that historically drives branded small-molecule pharmaceutical revenue down sharply, often 70-90%, within a year or two of the first generic launch. Given that, this valuation treats the business in two parts: the WAKIX years through the patent cliff, and what's left afterward. In the base case, WAKIX sales keep growing at a healthy but decelerating pace through 2029 - management's own pediatric studies and the idiopathic hypersomnia/Prader-Willi programs offer some room for continued volume growth, while a federal law that reshaped Medicare drug-pricing rules in 2024-2025 is already visibly compressing margins (cash earnings grew slower than revenue in both of the last two years). From 2030, generic entry sharply erodes WAKIX economics; by 2032 what remains is a small, stable royalty-like tail, since none of the company's pipeline candidates has yet produced a named, evidenced product that would replace the lost earnings - so none is assumed to. On this path, the shares are worth about $34.80 today. The bear case assumes the company does not secure the pediatric exclusivity extension, so generic competition starts several months sooner, and that the mid-stage pipeline (idiopathic hypersomnia and Prader-Willi trials) does not produce a launch before the cliff, mirroring what already happened with the discontinued Fragile X program. Growth slows to the high single digits almost immediately, and the post-2030 falloff is steeper and less durable. That path is worth about $24.90 a share. The bull case credits the two Phase 3 programs with reaching the market before 2030, pediatric exclusivity is secured (pushing generic entry to mid-2030 for most filers), and pricing pressure proves milder than in the base case. That path is worth about $48.40 a share. An important accounting note: the company amortizes a fixed intangible asset at a steady $23.8 million a year and also expenses licensing and clinical-milestone payments for its pipeline as it makes them; both are added back in arriving at cash earnings, which is standard, but it means the true economic cost of the 2030 patent cliff shows up only in how the growth assumptions taper after that date, not in a lower earnings figure today. We built that decay directly into the growth path for exactly this reason. The balance sheet is a real source of strength here: after roughly $154 million of term debt, Harmony is holding close to $670 million of cash and short-term investments, worth in the neighborhood of $7.50 a share net of debt after accounting for the fact the debt carries a somewhat above-market interest rate. That cushion is included in all three figures above and would let the company comfortably fund its pipeline, defend its patents, and weather the transition through 2030 without financial strain. The margin-of-safety price is around $21 a share - a discount steep enough to still leave a margin of safety even against the bear case above, appropriate for a company whose revenue is concentrated in a single product with a known, dated expiration on its exclusivity.
