Business condition attached to the margin of safety
The new onshore Highlander well is confirmed to be producing in commercial quantities and the trust is receiving royalty income.
Gulf Coast Ultra Deep Royalty Trust holds overriding royalty interests (a 3.6% interest in production from the onshore Highlander subject interest in South Louisiana, plus interests in Gulf of Mexico exploration prospects that have never produced commercially). The trust has no operations of its own. It only receives a slice of revenue if wells on those properties produce, and its statements are kept on a modified cash basis rather than standard accounting, so a conventional cash-flow valuation is not available. What the trust earns today: nothing. The Highlander subject interest is the only interest that has ever established commercial production. Its sole well suffered a water intrusion in January 2023, stopped producing on March 31, 2023, and was plugged and abandoned starting in March 2024. There was no distributable income in 2025 or 2024. In 2025 the trust's income was $978 of interest against $562,619 of administrative expenses; the shortfall is covered by Highlander Oil & Gas Assets LLC (HOGA), the property owner, which is obligated to fund the trust's expenses, so unitholders are not asked to pay them. There are 230,172,696 units outstanding. A replacement well on the Highlander interest was started in January 2025 and reached a total depth of 30,862 feet on February 17, 2026. However, the 10-K states that the future production status of that well remains unknown. A drilled well is not a producing well, and the trust has no control over operations, so we do not credit any income from it. Bear case ($0 per unit): the well produces nothing or is uneconomic, and the trust continues with no income. HOGA funds its expenses, and unitholders bear no debts, so we do not see a value below zero. Base case ($0 per unit): there is no signed contract, backlog, or producing well that gives a named source of future royalties. Under our approach, income that has not yet begun is worth nothing in the valuation, so the median case is also zero. Bull case ($0 per unit): even if the new well succeeds, we cannot point to test results, reserves, or production that would let us size the royalty stream, so it remains unvalued. The upside is real but unquantifiable from the filings; if production is confirmed, the picture would change materially and the estimate would be revisited. The trust agreement also gives HOGA a right to acquire all units for $10 per unit, but HOGA has no obligation to exercise it, and we place no value on it. What would make this wrong: commercial production from the new well. The margin-of-safety price is therefore zero pending confirmed production and royalty income. Units trade on the over-the-counter market, are thinly held, and the filing on record is the FY2025 10-K filed March 25, 2026. No financial data feed was available for this trust, so no owner-earnings history was compiled; the assessment rests on the 10-K text and financial statements.
