Fastenal is the largest industrial and construction supply distributor in North America, selling fasteners and maintenance products through branches, in-plant Onsite locations, and vending devices installed directly inside customer facilities. Over the past decade its owner earnings, meaning cash generated by operations less the capital spending and stock compensation needed to sustain the business, grew from roughly $326 million in 2016 to $1.04 billion in 2025, about 10.5% a year per share, with the share count essentially unchanged at 1.15 billion after adjusting for the two-for-one splits in 2019 and 2025. That growth is real but lumpy: annual swings ranged from a 35% decline to a 66% gain, because a growing distributor funds expansion by carrying more inventory and receivables, so cash earnings run below reported profits in fast-growing years and surge when growth pauses. Owner earnings of $0.91 per share in 2025 sat below reported earnings of $1.09 for exactly that reason. The balance sheet is a fortress, with $277 million of cash against just $125 million of debt, alongside $317 million of lease commitments on branch and distribution facilities. The bear case assumes a prolonged industrial downturn and online competition hold growth to 2% a year with a 2% long-run rate, discounted at 11.5%, giving about $9.86 a share; we ground that on the 2016 industrial recession, when owner earnings per share fell 15%, rather than on the 2020 pandemic, which this company actually grew through. The base case carries 7.5% growth for a decade fading to 2.5%, discounted at 9%, for roughly $20.97, set modestly below the trailing ten-year rate to allow for reversion toward the mean. The bull case sustains 11% growth with a 3% long-run rate discounted at 8.5%, about $31.73, matching the best sustained stretch in its own history as it continues taking share in a highly fragmented market. We anchor on the base case, because the downside here is genuinely floored: no meaningful debt, profitability in every year for decades, and a service model physically installed inside customer plants that is difficult and disruptive for a customer to replace. But we are only about 80 to 85% confident in the valuation itself, even while confidence in the business is far higher. Cash earnings are volatile enough that the starting point is uncertain, capital spending is stepping up sharply in 2026 as the company adds hub capacity and distribution automation, gross margins are absorbing tariff-driven cost pressure, and roughly 60% of the base-case value rests on growth beyond the tenth year. That argues for close to a 30% margin of safety rather than the narrower discount a franchise of this quality might otherwise justify, which puts the margin-of-safety price at $14.75.
