Evolv Technologies makes AI-powered weapons-detection security screening systems (the Evolv Express product line), sold mainly to K-12 schools, sports and entertainment venues, healthcare systems, and corporate campuses across the United States, largely on a hardware-plus-subscription basis. The company has grown quickly — revenue reached $145.9 million in 2025, up 40% from 2024 — but has not yet turned a profit on a cash basis in any year since it became a public company in 2021. That said, the trend is the real story here. Once non-cash stock compensation and normal swings in working capital are stripped out, the cash the business actually generates for its owners has moved from roughly $(132) million in 2023, to $(82) million in 2024, to $(32) million in 2025 — a sharp, multi-year narrowing of the gap. Operating costs fell in absolute dollars in 2025 even as revenue grew 40%, though part of that improvement traces to a January 2025 workforce reduction rather than to organic operating leverage alone, so we have been careful not to simply extrapolate that single year's pace of improvement forward. Two accounting judgments matter here. First, stock-based compensation ($21 million in 2025) is added back in the cash-flow statement but is treated as a real cost in this analysis, since it dilutes shareholders just as surely as cash pay would. Second, the company spends heavily to build the security units it leases to subscription customers; that spending is split between what is needed to sustain the existing fleet and what is funding new growth, with only the sustaining portion counted as an ongoing cost. On that basis, 2023's unusually large equipment spending — mostly funded by upfront customer deposits recorded as deferred revenue — was largely growth investment tied to that year's wave of new contracts, not a recurring cost of the current business. We see three plausible paths from here. In a bear case, the FTC's December 2024 settlement over past marketing claims (which gave a limited number of K-12 customers a window to cancel their contracts) continues to weigh on new bookings; gross margin, which slipped from 57% in 2024 to 52% in 2025, settles lower still; and the company's new variable-rate loan (added in July 2025, priced well above our standard 6% discount rate) becomes harder to refinance on good terms if growth slows, likely forcing a dilutive capital raise later in the decade. In this outcome the shares are worth little more than the company's net cash — close to zero. In a base case, revenue growth decelerates gradually from its current ~40% pace toward the roughly 20% growth rate of the company's underlying recurring subscription base (annual recurring revenue was $120.5 million at the end of 2025, up 21% year over year — slower than total revenue, since some of 2025's growth came from one-time hardware sales), margins hold near current levels, and cost discipline continues at a steadier, more moderate pace than 2025's outsized improvement. The company crosses into sustained positive owner earnings around 2027 and reaches a mature level of profitability within about a decade. On this path we estimate the shares are worth roughly $6.25 today. In a bull case, growth stays closer to its recent, stronger pace for longer, the margin pressure tied to the FTC settlement proves temporary, and cost leverage continues at closer to its demonstrated 2025 rate for another year or two before settling into a mature, profitable business. On this path we estimate the shares are worth roughly $11.85. Because so much of this value depends on what the business looks like several years from now rather than on cash it generates today, the estimate is unusually sensitive to how the next two or three years play out. A value anywhere close to the base-case estimate depends on the recent trend holding up — the owner-earnings gap continuing to narrow without relying on further one-off cost cuts, and recurring-revenue growth staying intact. Given how much of the case still needs to be proven, the margin-of-safety price sits at a large discount to that estimate, around $2.75 a share. One small item could not be fully pinned down from the filings: a roughly $1 million non-cash intangible write-off appears attributable to either 2024 or 2025 depending on how a disclosure is read. It is too small to affect any of the conclusions above.
