Ennis, Inc. is the largest U.S. maker of business forms, pressure-seal forms, labels, tags, envelopes and presentation folders that are sold to independent print distributors. It runs about 50 plants and reports a single print business. The demand is in long-term decline as paper moves to digital, and Ennis has held its earnings roughly steady mainly by buying small printers with its own cash (about $190 million over the last twelve fiscal years, including $38.9 million in fiscal 2026 for Northeastern Envelope, Envelope Superstore and CFC Print & Mail). It has no bank or bond debt; the only borrowing-like item is a $0.2 million standby letter of credit backed by cash. How we measure earnings. We start with operating cash flow, remove swings from receivables, inventory and payables, subtract stock compensation as a real cost, and subtract only the part of capital spending needed to maintain the plants. On that basis owner earnings per share were $1.55 in fiscal 2021, $2.11 in fiscal 2023, $2.04 in fiscal 2024, $1.88 in fiscal 2025 and $1.90 in fiscal 2026. Three further adjustments matter. (1) Interest earned on the company's cash pile ($4.0 million in fiscal 2024, $4.9 million in 2025, $1.9 million in 2026) is removed, because we count that cash separately, and so is a one-time $5.3 million recovery in a legal matter against Wright Printing in fiscal 2026. That leaves operating cash flow per share of about $1.89 in fiscal 2024, $1.69 in 2025 and $1.62 in 2026. (2) Fiscal 2026 capital spending of $11.7 million included an $8.0 million purchase of a facility that had been leased, and we did not strip that out of the stored figures. (3) Years before fiscal 2018 are left out because they include the apparel business sold in fiscal 2017. We use $1.69, the median of the last three years, as the current level of earning power. It is deliberately not the fiscal 2023 peak of about $2.11, when pricing and demand were unusually strong. Fiscal 2026 fell about 4.1% from the prior year on this basis, so we start the base case at a 5% decline, not a rebound. What drives the value. Print volume is shrinking: organic sales fell about $38.7 million in fiscal 2025 and about $25.0 million in fiscal 2026, while acquisitions added $13.2 million and $22.8 million. Revenue was $392.4 million in fiscal 2026, and gross margin improved to 30.7% from 29.7% on pricing discipline. Ennis's primary U.S. carbonless paper supplier permanently closed its mill in fiscal 2026, so the company built inventory from $38.8 million to $54.9 million and is switching to other, including foreign, sources. That inventory build depressed fiscal 2026 cash flow, but we strip such swings out of owner earnings. The first quarter of fiscal 2027 showed sales up 1.5% to $98.6 million with net earnings of $9.9 million versus $9.8 million a year earlier, and operating cash flow of $21.2 million as inventory stopped growing. Much of that sales gain comes from CFC, acquired in November 2025, so one quarter does not change our view. Base case: about $16.16 per share. The existing print business erodes 5% a year, in line with its recent record (about a 4% decline in cash flow in fiscal 2026, and organic sales declines of 6% to 9% in the last two years), from $1.69 to about $1.61 in the first year, and keeps eroding after year ten because nothing we can name and evidence stops the decline. Discounted at 6%, that stream is worth about $14.63 per share. The company owes nothing, and we add about $1.53 per share of excess cash (about $39 million of the $49.1 million on hand at May 31, 2026, keeping $10 million to run the business). Business value $14.63 plus cash $1.53 less debt of $0 gives about $16.16. We give no credit for future acquisitions: they cost real cash that never appears in owner earnings, and at a 5% erosion rate a typical purchase would not earn back its price at 6%. This is a change from our prior view, where earnings were assumed to grow 1% a year (3% in the bull case) with acquisitions. Bear case: about $11.23 per share. Erosion runs at 9% a year, the pace of fiscal 2025 when volume fell $38.7 million, from the fiscal 2026 level of $1.62. Cash flow in the first year is about $1.48 and the business is worth about $9.85. The company also loses the remaining lease claim from the former B&D Litho plant in Arizona: the landlord sought more than $4.0 million, most of the maintenance claims were dismissed after the March 2026 trial, but a claim that the premises were not surrendered in good condition is still pending, with a ruling not expected before the fourth quarter of calendar 2026 and only $0.5 million reserved. We deduct the full $4.0 million (about $0.16 per share). Business value about $9.85, plus about $1.53 of cash, less about $0.16 for the claim, and no debt, gives about $11.23. Without debt, this case has no refinancing risk. Bull case: about $21.88 per share. Pricing discipline continues and volume erosion slows to 3% a year, close to fiscal 2024 when sales were down 2.7%, from the fiscal 2024 level of $1.89. First-year cash flow is about $1.83 and the business is worth about $20.35. Adding about $1.53 of cash, with no debt, gives about $21.88. What we left out. We did not credit market recovery, share gains, new products or margin expansion. We also did not credit the tuck-in acquisition programme, even though it has been repeated for twelve straight years. The full-year effect of the fiscal 2026 purchases adds only about $7 million of annual sales, a small effect, and it is already reflected in current cash flow. What would make this wrong. If the first-quarter stabilization repeats over the next few quarters, erosion is closer to the bull case. If the switch away from the closed carbonless mill raises paper costs or loses customers, the bear case applies. The estimate is also sensitive to the assumed erosion rate: each percentage point matters by roughly $1.3 to $1.5 per share. The buyback of 793,556 shares at an average of $18.04 in fiscal 2026 and the $2.50 special dividend paid in fiscal 2025 show how management allocates cash, but we do not credit either as a source of value.

Chart analysis
A chartist would see a slow, choppy climb rather than a strong trend. The company's own five-year performance graph (total return with dividends reinvested, starting at $100 in February 2021) reads roughly 99 in 2022, 121 in 2023, 119 in 2024, 146 in 2025 and 153 in 2026. That is a long sideways base through 2022 to 2024, followed by a breakout to higher highs in 2025 and a further gain in 2026. The result is well ahead of the small-cap Russell 2000 (about 128) but behind the S&P 500 (about 194). Part of the 2025 jump reflects the $2.50 special dividend, which total-return charts count as gain. The company repurchased shares at an average of $18.04 during fiscal 2026, and a chartist would treat that area as a reference level. A sturdy quarterly dividend of $0.26 gives the stock a steady floor, but the lack of a sharp trend and low volatility mark this as a range-bound, income-style stock.
