Dakota Gold is a pre-revenue gold exploration and development company that controls about 49,500 acres in the historic Homestake district around Lead, South Dakota. Its lead asset is Richmond Hill, a former Barrick heap-leach mine now in reclamation, which Dakota Gold holds under an option from Barrick running to December 31, 2028 (annual payments of $510,000 in 2027 and 2028; on exercise Barrick receives 400,000 more shares and a 1% net smelter royalty). A July 2025 Initial Assessment with Cash Flow by independent Qualified Persons outlined a 10 million-tonne-a-year heap-leach operation producing about 153,000 ounces of gold a year for 17 years at an all-in sustaining cost near $1,050 an ounce, needing about $384 million of initial capital, at a $2,350 gold price. The company plans a Pre-Feasibility Study in the second half of 2026 and a Feasibility Study in 2027, and must still obtain Lawrence County and South Dakota permits. The second project, Maitland, is aiming for a first resource estimate on its Unionville Zone by the end of 2026. The business has never earned revenue. Its cash result after stock-based pay and equipment spending has been a steady outflow: about $38 million in 2023, $34 million in 2024, $30 million in 2025, and $17 million in the first half of 2026 (about $35 million a year). We treat stock-based pay as a real cost and count purchases of mineral land as investment rather than upkeep. The company has no borrowings, so there is no debt to subtract. At June 30, 2026 it held $99.3 million of cash after a 2026 share offering that raised about $71 million, and there are about 137.8 million shares including options and restricted units. How we value it: a mine that has not yet completed feasibility, been permitted, financed or begun construction is not yet a cash flow we can count on, so none of the cases credits future mine profits. What we can count is the cash in hand, the spending the company has laid out to reach its decision points, and the mineral properties themselves, which are carried at about $83.4 million, the price they were bought for or fair-valued at when acquired, including arm's-length purchases from Barrick. The gold price assumed in the study is not part of our valuation. Bear case (about $0.15 a share): spending continues at roughly $34 million a year until the Richmond Hill option deadline at the end of 2028, but the studies or permits do not carry the project forward and the land has no evidenced resale value. The business is worth about $79 million less than its cash after that spending, leaving roughly $20 million with nothing owed to lenders. Base case (about $0.92 a share): the company spends about $34 million a year through the 2027 Feasibility Study (about $49 million in today's money), leaving about $50 million of cash, and the property package holds at least the value it was acquired at, worth about $76 million today. Total about $127 million with no debt. Bull case (about $0.97 a share): the same path at the lower spending rate actually achieved in 2025 (about $29.5 million a year), leaving about $57 million of cash plus the property package at about $76 million, roughly $133 million with no debt. The bull case sits close to the base case because the only upside we can evidence is the company's own spending discipline; a built mine is the obvious larger prize, but it depends on a study, permits and several hundred million dollars of financing that do not exist yet. What would make this wrong: a positive Feasibility Study in 2027, permits in hand and financing arranged would turn Richmond Hill into a project with a visible path to cash flow, and we would then value its output directly. The nearby Wharf heap-leach mine, operating half a mile away in the same county on similar mineralization, shows such mines can be permitted and run there. On the downside, further share sales to fund spending and a failed permit would reduce the value per share. Because the value rests on cash that is being spent and on land rather than earnings, the margin-of-safety price carries a large discount.

Chart analysis
A chartist would see a strong uptrend. The shares were sold in a March 2025 offering at $2.83, made a new 52-week high in September 2025, and in late September 2026 trade near $6.85 after an 8% one-day jump on September 22, 2026, well above a 50-day average of about $5.55 and a 200-day average of about $5.37. With the 50-day above the 200-day and the price above both, the technical picture reads as bullish momentum, though the gap above the averages after a sharp move would make a chartist expect a pullback toward the $5.50 area before trend continuation. The stock moves more than the market (beta about 1.2) and tends to track the gold price.
