CRISPR Therapeutics is a gene-editing company that has never earned a sustainable profit. Its one commercial product, CASGEVY, is sold by its partner Vertex, and CRISPR Therapeutics receives 40% of the product's results under the collaboration. The company's own filing says that share is currently not enough to cover the program's expenses, so it bears 40% of the losses, subject to certain limits. Beyond CASGEVY it has a pipeline of unapproved programs and a 2025 deal with Sirius (which cost a $96.3 million research-and-development charge, paid partly in shares) that generate no revenue today. Owner earnings (operating cash flow less working-capital swings, stock compensation and capital spending) tell the story. Over 2017-2025 they were negative in seven of nine years. The two positive years, 2019 (about $0.94 per share) and 2021 (about $4.20), came from large one-time collaboration revenue ($289.6 million in 2019 and $915.0 million in 2021). In 2022-2025, the years that describe the business as it exists now, owner earnings per share were -$8.17, -$2.02, -$4.65 and -$5.51, a median of about -$5.08. We treated all capital spending as maintenance because it is small. Operating cash flow reconciles to net loss after adding back depreciation, stock compensation, a $96.3 million non-cash research charge, other non-cash items and working-capital movements. In 2025 the total owner-earnings loss was about $495.5 million, larger than the $391.9 million loss in 2024. Because nothing the business does today produces positive owner earnings, we do not value it as an earnings stream. We credit only what can be documented: cash, the cost of running the business, and the debt taken on. The company held $1,975.8 million of cash and marketable securities at December 31, 2025. By June 30, 2026 the figure was $2,364.4 million, after a March 2026 convertible note offering (1.125% interest, due March 1, 2031; the offering was announced at $550 million with an option for $50 million more, and about $586 million is recorded as debt at June 30, 2026). Net of that debt, that is about $1,778 million, or roughly $18.4 per share on about 96.5 million shares. Against that we must set the cost of continuing to operate. In the first half of 2026, operating cash outflow plus stock compensation and capital spending was about $227 million, so we assume about $450 million a year, below the $495.5 million lost in 2025. Base case (about $5.96 per share): the company keeps spending about $450 million a year for three more years, then spending stops exceeding what its collaboration income covers. The company itself says its cash funds its plan for at least 24 months, and in 2025 it cut research spending by about $25 million, mostly through lower headcount, so spending can be reduced. We credit no value to CASGEVY sales growth or to any unapproved program, because none of that is contracted, secured or a repeated, proven result, and CASGEVY's results are set by Vertex, not by CRISPR Therapeutics. The value is the $1,778.2 million of cash net of debt, less $1,202.9 million (the present value of three years of spending), which leaves $575.3 million, or about $5.96 per share on 96.5 million shares. Bear case (about -$1.22 per share): spending continues at about $450 million a year for five years with no offset from CASGEVY. Five years of spending has a present value of about $1,896 million, above the $1,778 million of cash net of debt, so the company would owe more than it is worth by roughly $117 million. The 2025 share sale (about $398 million raised) and the 2026 note offering show how much the company relies on outside funding. Bull case (about $9.88 per share): the company brings spending in line with its collaboration income after two years, consistent with its stated runway of at least 24 months. Two years of spending has a present value of about $825 million, leaving about $953 million, or $9.88 per share. What could make this wrong: these cases deliberately give no value to CASGEVY's growth or to the pipeline, so the shares are worth more if those succeed and the company controls its spending. They are worth less if spending rises, more capital must be raised on dilutive terms, or if the convertible notes convert into shares (conversion price about $76.56 per share). The number of years of spending assumed in each case is a judgement, not a fact from the filings. The details of the notes came from the company's press release, not the annual report, and we could not review the second-quarter 2026 report text for their full terms. Future lease payments and a contingent liability disclosed in the 2025 report are not deducted. The margin-of-safety price is well below the base case, at about $2.00 per share, because the business burns cash and the outcome depends on management choices we cannot verify.
