CompX International makes two kinds of products: security hardware (locks and latches for cabinets, mailboxes, gas pumps, tool storage, healthcare equipment, transportation and government/military applications) and marine components (throttle controls, gauges, wake and steering systems sold mainly to boat builders, including the towboat/wakeboard-boat market). Security is the larger, steadier of the two, generating roughly three-quarters of sales. Marine is smaller but swings hard with boat-building demand - it roughly doubled during the pandemic boating boom of 2021-2022, then fell by nearly half over 2023-2024 as that boom unwound, before partly recovering in 2025. The company has no debt and carries surplus cash, short-term investments, and a small interest-bearing loan to an affiliated company in the same corporate family (it is controlled by the Simmons family through a chain of holding companies). It has paid a dividend every year for decades. We measure the cash the business actually generates for owners each year (operating cash flow, after stripping out the swings from inventory and receivables timing and after setting aside what it takes to keep the existing plant and equipment running, as opposed to spending aimed at growing the business). Over the last ten years that figure has ranged from about $0.91 to $1.89 per share, moving up and down with the marine cycle described above. We use the middle (median) of that ten-year range, about $1.37 per share, as the normalized starting point for our estimate of value, rather than the higher figure of the last year or two, because part of the recent strength includes a one-time inventory-stocking order from a boat manufacturer and a large government security shipment that are unlikely to repeat exactly. One accounting note: CompX does not report any material stock-based compensation, so no add-back was needed there. Our base case assumes both product lines keep growing at a modest, mid-single-digit pace over the next several years - roughly matching the company's own recent guidance for 2026 and close to its actual growth rate last year - before slowing further after that as the security-products niches mature. We assume some of the cost pressure from tariffs on imported metals and electronic components gets passed through in pricing, as management has been doing, without fully protecting margins. Beyond ten years, we assume the business keeps earning at roughly this level, growing slightly faster than inflation, since neither the lock business nor the marine-parts business has any dated contract or patent that would cause it to end - it simply requires ongoing, modest reinvestment to keep going, which is already accounted for. On this basis we estimate the shares are worth roughly $34 today. Because so much of that value depends on what the business earns many years from now, roughly two-thirds of the estimate rests on that long-run view rather than the next ten years, so it is worth being clear-eyed about it. Our bear case assumes the marine business stays weak for longer, tariff costs are only partly recovered through price increases for an extended period, and government-security order timing works against the company for a couple of years, similar to what happened in 2024. Earnings power settles at a permanently lower, flat level. That comes to roughly $21 per share. Our bull case assumes the recent pickup in marine sales reflects a genuine, lasting recovery in boat production rather than a one-off restocking, that security wins in government, healthcare and industrial markets continue, and that price increases more than offset tariff-related cost inflation. That comes to roughly $45 per share. Given the meaningful but not extreme gap between our bear and base cases, we think a reasonable price to pay today, to have a good chance at an attractive long-term return, is around $25 per share.
