Capitol Federal Financial is the holding company for Capitol Federal Savings Bank, based in Topeka, Kansas, with 46 branches in nine Kansas counties and three Missouri counties at September 30, 2025. It gathers deposits (including a high-yield savings offering) and lends them out, historically mostly as low-rate one- to four-family mortgages. It earns money on the spread between what it charges on loans and securities and what it pays on deposits and borrowings. That spread is thin: the net interest margin was 1.96% in fiscal 2025 (year ended September 30), up from 1.77% the year before. What we measure. We value the company on owner earnings, meaning operating cash flow with the swings from other assets, other liabilities, tax balances and derivative collateral removed, less stock compensation and the non-cash ESOP share-release expense (both treated as real costs), less capital spending. Capital spending has been $5 to $15 million a year on branches and technology, and we treated all of it as maintenance. Per diluted share this gives roughly $0.63 (FY2017), $0.74, $0.64, $0.54, $0.47, $0.62 (FY2022), $0.35 (FY2023), $0.31 (FY2024) and $0.50 (FY2025). FY2023's reported net loss of $101.7 million came from a $192.6 million net loss on securities sales (an intentional balance-sheet repositioning), which is a non-cash item in operating cash flow and does not depress owner earnings the same way. Cash flow in FY2023 to FY2025 was also held down by recurring outflows in other liabilities ($4 to $23 million a year); we removed them as working capital movements, but we could not tell from the filing what they consist of. Anchor. We use the median of fiscal 2020 to 2025, about $0.48 per share. That window spans low-rate and high-rate years and the securities repositioning, so it is neither a peak nor a trough. Trailing results were not used to set the level. Growth check. Owner earnings per share rose about 58% in FY2025 (from $0.31 to $0.50), a rebound from a depressed FY2024. Our base case assumes about 20% for the first year, well below that, and only to reach about $0.58. Support: net income for the first nine months of fiscal 2026 was $64.0 million versus $49.2 million a year earlier, and each of the three quarters ($20.3, $20.1 and $23.6 million) was above the same quarter of fiscal 2025 ($15.4, $15.4 and $18.4 million). The mechanism is filed: the bank is redirecting repayments of low-yielding one- to four-family loans (down $400.0 million in FY2025) into higher-yielding commercial loans (up $607.0 million, about 40%), and that lifted the margin 19 basis points in FY2025. What each case assumes. Base: owner earnings of about $0.58, $0.60 and $0.60 per share in the next three years, then flat at $0.60 indefinitely. We credit no growth beyond that: no further margin expansion, no share gains and no balance-sheet growth are counted, and flat is what the record shows, since owner earnings were about $0.63 in FY2017 and $0.50 in FY2025. The business is a deposit franchise that has kept earning through rate cycles, which is the only reason we let earnings continue past year ten. The $0.60 level is about where the current year is tracking, so it is a return to a level already being reported, not a forecast of improvement. Base value: about $10.0 per share. Bear: the commercial loan book that grew about 40% in one year (mostly commercial real estate) hits credit losses, and deposit costs keep pressing a 1.96% margin. Owner earnings fall to about $0.25 for three years, then settle near $0.28, between the FY2024 low of $0.31 and further erosion, and stay there. The evidence for the risk is the concentration of new lending in a category the bank has been building only recently, though we note asset quality at September 30, 2025 was strong (loans 30 to 89 days delinquent were 0.15% of loans; weighted average debt service coverage 1.65x and loan-to-value 61% on commercial real estate and construction loans). Bear value: about $4.6 per share. Bull: the same repricing continues on the current path and owner earnings reach about $0.75 (near the FY2018 high of $0.74) by year three, then flat: about $0.65, $0.72, $0.75. Bull value: about $12.4 per share. What could make this wrong. Our flat, no-growth view of a thin-margin lender leaves value entirely dependent on the deposit franchise persisting; a sharp rise in deposit costs or credit losses on commercial real estate would push results toward the bear case. Because owner earnings from operating cash flow do not capture loan growth funded from retained capital, the figures above assume the balance sheet stays about the same size. We did not add cash or subtract borrowings; the case values are the discounted owner earnings, and leverage risk is reflected only in the bear case. No case is at or below zero. Margin-of-safety price. Given a thin margin, a fast-growing commercial book and a wide gap between the bear and base cases, the margin-of-safety price is about $5.80 per share, roughly 42% below the base value and about 26% above the bear value.
