Candel Therapeutics is a clinical-stage biotech developing viral immunotherapies for cancer. Its lead product, aglatimagene besadenovec, is an engineered adenovirus injected into the tumor and combined with the oral drug valacyclovir. In December 2024 Candel reported that a 745-patient, placebo-controlled phase 3 trial in intermediate- and high-risk localized prostate cancer (added to standard radiation therapy) met its primary endpoint of disease-free survival, an endpoint agreed in advance with the FDA under a Special Protocol Assessment. The product holds an RMAT designation, and the company plans to file for US approval (a BLA) in the fourth quarter of 2026. Behind it sit a planned phase 3 in lung cancer (NSCLC) after checkpoint-inhibitor failure, pancreatic cancer work, and a second virus, linoserpaturev, in brain tumors. The business today sells nothing. Since 2020 it has consumed cash every year: after stock-based pay (which we count as a real cost) and equipment spending, owner earnings were about -$14M (2020), -$26M (2021), -$35M (2022), -$37M (2023), -$33M (2024) and -$45M (2025). The burn has accelerated as filing and launch preparation began: in the first half of 2026 the business used about $41M before interest, an annual rate of roughly $82M, and second-quarter research spending alone was $19.8M. Reported net losses swing widely because warrants are revalued each quarter at market prices; those swings are non-cash and we ignore them. How we value it: we only credit earnings that are already secured or that come from a process the business has repeated for years. An unapproved drug, however good its data, is neither, so none of our cases assigns value to future aglatimagene sales. That leaves the company's cash, the debt against it, and the cash the company has committed to spending on its stated plan to reach an FDA decision. At June 30, 2026 Candel held $201.6M of cash after raising equity in 2026 (shares outstanding rose from 54.9M to 76.1M). It owes $50M to Trinity Capital under a term loan drawn in October 2025, secured on substantially all assets, interest-only until late 2028 at the greater of prime plus 3% or 9.75%, maturing October 1, 2030 with a 4.25% exit fee. Because that rate runs roughly four points above our 6% discount rate, we count the loan at about $59M. About 14M options and warrants are outstanding in addition to the 76.1M shares; we have not added them to the share count. Base case: the BLA is filed in Q4 2026, the FDA reaches a decision under a standard review around the end of 2027, and spending continues at the first-half 2026 rate (about $82M a year) until then. The cash on hand less that spending is worth about $84M today; the loan costs about $59M; about $25M, or $0.32 per share, is left over. Bull case: the RMAT designation earns a priority review, bringing the decision forward about a quarter to the third quarter of 2027, at the same spending rate. The business is worth about $103M, owes $59M, leaving about $44M or $0.57 per share. Bear case: the FDA asks for more before approving. Specific risks the company discloses include the disease-free-survival endpoint, which has not been used in a prior approval, and reliance on outside manufacturers for a viral product. Here the decision moves out to mid-2028 while spending runs at about $100M a year, the second-quarter 2026 rate. Remaining cash (about $13M in today's money) falls well short of the $59M owed to the lender, so the company would owe roughly $46M more than it is worth, about -$0.61 per share. In practice this would mean heavy dilution from new stock sales or a loan restructuring, since the loan is secured on the company's assets. What would make this wrong: approval and a successful launch would create value that none of these cases include. That value depends on an FDA decision and on sales that have not happened. We will value the product once it is approved and has a record of sales we can measure. Management could also slow spending, for example by delaying the lung-cancer phase 3, which would keep more cash for shareholders. The share price reflects expectations of approval and sales; our figures reflect only the cash and obligations that exist today.

Chart analysis
A chartist would see a stock that has re-rated sharply over the past year: from a 52-week low near $4.35, through an equity offering priced around $5.45, up to a high of $14.00, and last trading near $11 (late September 2026). The longer picture is a classic binary-event biotech chart: the stock fell from its 2021 IPO into low single digits, gapped higher on the late-2024 phase 3 readout, retraced, and has now rebuilt a higher-low uptrend ahead of the planned Q4 2026 filing. Price has pulled back roughly 20% from the high, so near-term momentum has cooled. Chartists would watch whether the $9-10 area holds as support, with $14 as overhead resistance, and would expect the filing and FDA acceptance to produce gap moves in either direction.
