Blue Bird builds school buses in Fort Valley, Georgia, and sells them mainly through 44 dealer locations to school districts in the U.S. and Canada. It offers diesel, gasoline, propane, natural gas and electric buses, and also sells replacement parts. Its two main rivals are Thomas Built Buses (Daimler) and IC Bus (International). School bus service is treated as a mandatory public service, which is why demand has been steadier than for most vehicles. What we measure. We estimate what the business earns for its owners: cash from operations, less the swings in receivables, inventory and payables, less stock compensation (a real cost), less the part of equipment spending needed just to stay in business. On that basis, per share, results were roughly $0.5 to $1.9 in fiscal 2016-2019, near zero or negative in fiscal 2020-2022 (COVID school closures, then supply-chain shortages and cost inflation ahead of price increases), and then $1.28 in fiscal 2023, $3.10 in fiscal 2024 and $3.78 in fiscal 2025. The business changed after 2022: prices were reset to cover costs, output rose to over 9,400 buses in fiscal 2025 (from about 9,000), and sales reached $1.48 billion versus roughly $0.7-1.0 billion in the prior years. We therefore measure only from fiscal 2023 onward. The median of fiscal 2023-2025 is about $3.10 per share (about $103 million), which we restate to about $2.94 on today's higher share count of roughly 35 million. Fiscal 2025 grew 22% in owner earnings per share; our base case starts below that at the $2.94 level because we treat fiscal 2025 as the top of a two-year recovery rather than a new normal. Base case, about $40 per share. Owner earnings hold at about $2.94 per share for ten years. What supports this: two straight years of higher margins after price increases, a backlog of about 3,070 buses at September 2025 with over 9,400 sold in the year, and a business that has sold roughly $0.9-1.0 billion a year in ordinary years. After year ten we credit about $2.00 per share, between today's level and the $0.5-1.9 range of 2016-2019, because we cannot point to evidence that today's margin persists indefinitely. We give no credit for growth: electric-bus adoption, market-share gains, tariffs pass-through or a federal grant (the Department of Energy is still reviewing the Georgia facility grant) are not yet secured. Bear case, about $15.60 per share. The 2023-2025 margin recovery proves to be partly timing. Backlog fell from about 4,800 to 3,070 buses in fiscal 2025, the union contract expires in 2027, tariffs raised imported-component costs in the second half of fiscal 2025, and both competitors have larger parent companies and offer electric and gasoline buses. Owner earnings fall to about $1.30 per share (the fiscal 2023 level) for ten years and then about $0.65, in line with the fiscal 2016-2019 median. Balance-sheet debt is modest (about $91 million of term loans against $229 million of cash at September 2025) and is not what drives this case. Bull case, about $59 per share. Fiscal 2025 owner earnings of about $124 million hold, which is about $3.54 per share on today's share count, and continue. This is supported by nine-month fiscal 2026 operating cash flow of $115 million versus $111 million a year earlier on 12% higher sales. Nothing beyond the current level is credited. What we could not reconcile. Reported net income for the nine months ended June 2026 was $245 million versus $91 million a year earlier, including $185 million in the June quarter alone, while operating cash flow was flat. The quarterly filing text was not available to us, so we could not confirm the cause and we ignored it; our estimate rests on cash flow. Diluted shares also rose to about 35.2 million in that quarter. If the June-quarter jump reflects a repeatable operating change, our estimates would be too low. What would make us wrong. Higher: sustained volumes and pricing above fiscal 2025 levels. Lower: pricing giveback, a weaker 2027 order book, a strike or component shortages, which is what happened in fiscal 2021-2022, when owner earnings turned negative.
