BlackSky Technology Inc. (BKSY) stock intrinsic value fair value estimate & owner earnings analysis

Margin of safety$0.00 ComplexityHigh Updated
BlackSky operates a fleet of small Earth-imaging satellites and sells imagery, analytics and, increasingly, complete "Mission Solutions" (customer-owned Gen-3 satellites and ground systems) mainly to defense and intelligence customers. Its largest program is a contract with the National Reconnaissance Office (Electro-Optical Commercial Layer), and it has won Gen-3 programs with customers in India and Indonesia. Revenue was $106.6 million in 2025, up from $34.1 million in 2021, and year-end backlog of executed contracts was $345.3 million, of which $77.3 million is scheduled for 2026 and $55.2 million for 2027. What the business actually earns for owners is the problem. We measure earnings as operating cash flow, less the swings in working capital, less stock compensation (a real cost paid in shares), less the part of satellite and equipment spending needed to keep the business running rather than grow it. On that basis the company has been negative in every year we could measure, from 2021 to 2025: about $(15.94), $(4.73), $(1.76), $(2.17) and $(2.66) per share, adjusted for the 2024 one-for-eight reverse split. In 2025 operating cash flow was $(28.3) million, stock compensation was $14.2 million, and satellite work in process plus equipment purchases totaled $46.6 million. Much of the reported cash flow was helped by customer prepayments (a $28.2 million rise in contract liabilities), which we removed because it is timing rather than earning power. For 2025 the figures reconcile to the cash flow statement within rounding once non-cash items such as depreciation, debt-related charges and derivative losses are included. We used the 2023-2025 years as the current business (2021 and 2022 came earlier in the company's growth and are shown for the record); every year in the window is negative. Growth in the bag: the backlog of $345.3 million is contracted revenue, and we credit it. What we could not credit is any level of profit or cash generation on that revenue, because the company has never converted revenue growth into positive cash after its own capital spending and stock compensation, and the filings show no signed cost reduction, customer-funded satellite build, or margin change that would flip the sign. Cash and short-term investments were $124.4 million at the end of 2025 after $185 million of new debt was raised in the year (against $84.5 million of debt repaid), so the company is funding its losses from capital raised rather than from operations, and four customers provided 89% of 2025 revenue. Bear case: the negative earning power continues, capital raised is consumed, and equity holders are left with no value. Value per share: $0. Base case: contracted backlog is delivered but, on the record to date, does not produce positive owner earnings, so nothing can be capitalized. Value per share: $0. Bull case: the company executes on Gen-3 and Mission Solutions contracts already in backlog, but without a demonstrated path to positive cash after capital spending and stock compensation, we do not credit value. Value per share: $0. We have not assigned a positive value for the possibility of a turnaround, defense-budget growth or a wider market for satellite imagery, because none of these can be pointed to in the company's results today. What would make this wrong: if customer prepayments and Mission Solutions contracts reduce the company's own satellite spending, and operating cash flow exceeds stock compensation plus maintenance spending for several consecutive years, the business would be worth something. No margin-of-safety price can be set until that appears in the reported results.
