Armstrong World Industries makes suspended ceiling products in the United States. Its Mineral Fiber segment sells acoustic and fire-rated ceiling tile, mostly through building-materials distributors (about 63% of 2025 sales) and, to a lesser degree, home centers (about 7%). Its Architectural Specialties segment sells metal, wood, resin and glass ceilings, walls and exterior panels, built up through acquisitions such as 3form and Zahner in 2024 and Geometrik and Parallel in 2025. The company also owns half of Worthington Armstrong Venture (WAVE), a partnership with Worthington Enterprises that makes the metal grid that holds ceiling tile up. In 2025 WAVE had sales of $513.5 million and net earnings of $230.0 million. How we measured earnings. We start from cash from operations, remove swings in receivables, inventory, payables and taxes, subtract stock-based pay, and subtract only the spending needed to keep the plants running (part of the company's capital spending is treated as growth spending and left out). One judgement matters a lot here. The company reports cash it receives from WAVE ($113.0 million in 2025, $97.8 million in 2024) as an investing item, so it never appears in operating cash flow. That cash is a recurring payment to shareholders, paid out of WAVE's earnings (Armstrong's share of WAVE earnings was $112.3 million in 2025) and WAVE's long-term liabilities fell during the year, so we do not see it as borrowed money. We therefore count it. We then add back interest paid ($29.7 million in 2025) so the business is valued before its lenders and the debt is subtracted separately. On that basis, cash generated by the business before lenders was about $250 million in 2023, $312 million in 2024 and $372 million in 2025. The 2025 figure includes a $24 million cash-tax deferral, which we treat as timing and remove. We use 2024 and 2025 as the measuring window because the 2024 and 2025 acquisitions changed the mix of the business, and we start from $330 million, the midpoint of the 2024 figure and the adjusted 2025 figure. Cash generation grew 19% in 2025; our base case assumes 3% in its first year, well below that, because the 2025 jump combined a full year of new acquisitions, price increases and the tax timing, and we credit only price. About $25 million a year of acquisition-related intangible amortization is added back automatically; we credit no growth from further acquisitions, and the bear case lets earnings stop rising. Base case. Ceiling prices are the one growth driver we can point to in the filings: higher unit values added about $43 million of sales in 2023 and $58 million in 2025, and the company and WAVE announced further price increases effective in the first quarter of 2026. First-half 2026 sales rose 9% (second quarter 11%), and on our rough approximation cash generation was up about 9% as well. We credit 3% a year for five years, 2% for the next five, and none after that, on the view that a replacement-driven ceiling franchise keeps earning at that level without new predictions. Not credited: sales volume growth (Mineral Fiber volumes fell about $14 million in 2025), share gains, new acquisitions, margin gains and share buybacks. The business is worth about $6.7 billion, the company owes about $450 million net, leaving about $6.3 billion, or $146.79 a share. Bear case. Home Depot (including its 2025 purchase of distributor GMS) and Lowe's (including its purchase of distributor Foundation Building Materials) each exceeded 10% of gross sales in 2025 and together bought $937.8 million. Both distributors are now owned by retailers, and the company itself warns that customer consolidation could squeeze margins. In the 2020 downturn sales fell 9.7% and cash generation fell about 10%. The bear case combines a repeat of 2020 with lost pricing power, taking cash generation 15% below our starting point, about $280 million, with no growth afterward. The business is worth about $4.7 billion against $450 million owed, leaving about $4.2 billion, or $98.89 a share. Debt is no obstacle: the credit facility (a $410.6 million term loan at the end of 2025 plus a $500 million revolver) runs to December 2030, and cash generation is roughly nine times annual interest. Bull case. Cash generation stays at the 2025 level of about $372 million, which first-half 2026 results support, and prices keep rising as they did in 2025 (about 4% of sales): 4% a year for five years, then 3% for five, then flat. The business is worth about $8.2 billion, less $450 million owed, leaving about $7.7 billion, or $181.40 a share. Debt. At June 30, 2026 the company had $492.0 million of borrowings and $36.2 million of finance leases against $78.6 million of cash, for net debt of about $450 million (about $10.53 a share, on 42.7 million diluted shares). Net debt rose in the first half of 2026 as the company spent $137.4 million on share repurchases and $64.8 million on acquisitions. Change since our last analysis. We previously estimated $53, $124 and $177 a share. The new figures are higher in the bear and base cases mainly because we now count the WAVE cash and value everything at one standard 6% rate, and lower in growth because we now credit only price-led growth of 2% to 3% rather than 8% to 10%. What would make this wrong: a loss or repricing of the Home Depot or Lowe's relationships, a change in the WAVE partnership, or a construction slump deeper than 2020. Some company-level cash-flow items could not be split between years for 2018 and 2019, when earlier-year figures included international operations that were later sold, so we placed no weight on those years.

Chart analysis
The annual reports we reviewed do not include a share-price history, so we cannot describe the stock's trend, support and resistance levels or trading volume, and we have not tried to infer them. A chartist would want to see whether the shares have kept making higher highs alongside the steady rise in the company's cash generation over 2023 to 2026, whether pullbacks have held above prior lows, and whether heavy buying by the company itself (about $137 million of buybacks in the first half of 2026) has coincided with rising or falling prices. Those observations require the actual price chart.
