Business condition attached to the margin of safety Three consecutive quarters of positive operating cash flow after inventory and receivables build, with stock compensation covered, from AUCATZYL sales.
Autolus is a UK-based biotechnology company whose one commercial product is AUCATZYL (obecabtagene autoleucel, obe-cel), a CAR-T cell therapy for adult B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia, approved by the US FDA in November 2024 and launched in the United Kingdom in December 2025. Revenue grew from about $10 million in 2024 to about $75 million in 2025, and to $72 million in the first half of 2026 alone (second quarter $45.7 million). The company also carries a royalty and milestone financing with Blackstone, and a licence with BioNTech. The business has never generated positive earning power on a cash basis. After deducting working-capital build, stock compensation and capital spending, cash earnings were about -$1.93, -$1.48, -$1.04, -$0.85 and -$0.87 per share for 2021 through 2025. In 2025 operating cash burn was $284 million, of which $65 million was launch-related inventory and receivables build that should not recur at that scale. Burn is improving: operating cash use was $90 million in the first half of 2026 against $148 million a year earlier, and the second-quarter net loss narrowed to $39 million. At year-end 2025 the company held about $301 million of cash and securities, which it says funds operations for at least twelve months, and roughly $90 million has been used since. We credit no growth beyond what has already happened. AUCATZYL is a new product in a new market, so further sales growth, treatment-centre additions, European rollout and margin improvement are not yet proven or contracted, and are left out. Even holding revenue at the recent run rate of roughly $145 to $180 million a year, the current cost base (heavy R&D on pipeline programs plus manufacturing) still produces negative cash earnings, so nothing we can name and evidence yields positive value. Bear case ($0): sales stall at today's level, burn continues, and the cash on hand is consumed before break-even, leaving nothing for shareholders; existing holders would likely also be diluted by new share issues. Base case ($0): revenue is held at today's level with no credited improvement; the cash being spent equals what the business produces, so the shares are worth nothing beyond the cash they are consuming. Bull case ($0.40): the sequential improvement in burn seen over the last five quarters continues until the business reaches cash break-even, and the roughly $100 million of cash left afterward (about $0.40 per share) is what remains for owners; no earnings after break-even are credited because none are yet demonstrated. What would make this wrong: sustained positive operating cash flow from AUCATZYL, which the second-quarter 2026 trend makes plausible but does not yet show. We tested our base case against the latest results: even with revenue up 2.4 times year on year, first-half 2026 operating cash flow was still -$90 million, so a positive value still needs earnings that have not appeared. Working-capital items in the cash flow statement were reconstructed from the filings; operating lease liability movements were excluded from working capital. The margin-of-safety price reflects a near-zero value for an unprofitable, single-product, dilution-exposed company.
