Business condition attached to the margin of safety Confirmation across the second and third fiscal-quarter results (the holiday selling season) that the rebound seen in the first quarter continues, showing that fiscal 2026's sales decline was mainly a temporary order-timing and retailer inventory issue rather than a lasting loss of shelf space or demand with its largest online retail customer.
American Outdoor Brands sells outdoor lifestyle and shooting-sports accessories – hunting and shooting accessories, personal security products, and outdoor cooking equipment (Grilla Grills) – through e-commerce, traditional retail, and direct channels, almost entirely in the United States. The company carries no debt: its $75 million credit line was undrawn at fiscal year-end, and it holds meaningful cash on hand, so essentially all of the business's value flows straight through to shareholders. Fiscal 2026 (ended April 30, 2026) was a weak year: net sales fell 14.3% to $190.5 million. Management attributes most of the decline to two temporary effects – the company's largest online retail customer reducing orders as it worked down its own inventory, and other retail customers having pulled forward orders into the prior quarter ahead of new U.S. tariffs. The company also took a modest impairment charge after its board approved divesting the ust-branded survival gear business in December 2025, continuing a pattern of shedding underperforming acquired brands (the company wrote off much larger goodwill amounts in two earlier fiscal years following acquisitions that did not pay off). The most recent quarterly results, reported in September 2026, showed sales up over 25% from a year earlier and a strong rebound in cash generation – an early sign the fiscal 2026 dip is unwinding, though only one quarter of data is available so far. A large share of the company's reported earnings charge in recent years has been amortization of intangible assets from acquisitions made in 2021; this is a real accounting cost but not an ongoing cash cost, and it has been shrinking each year as those assets run off, which should support reported profitability going forward even without sales growth. Three cases were built from the company's own five-year record (fiscal 2022 through fiscal 2026), which captures a full cycle from post-acquisition cleanup through a supply-chain-driven inventory swing and the tariff-related dip: Bear case: the loss of orders from the large online retail customer (which alone represents around 18-20% of sales) and rising tariff costs prove durable rather than temporary, and profitability stays near or below the weak levels actually experienced in two of the last five years, gradually recovering only modestly over a decade. Value: about $4 in owner earnings terms, plus net cash. Base case: sales recover over the next two to three years toward the levels seen as recently as fiscal 2025, consistent with the rebound already visible in the first quarter of the new fiscal year, then grow only slightly thereafter – reflecting that this business has not shown sustained top-line growth over the past five years – with modest further per-share gains from the share buybacks the company has consistently carried out. Value: about $14, plus net cash. Bull case: the sales recovery is more complete and durable, tariff costs are fully passed through in pricing without hurting demand, the outdoor cooking line (which grew even in the weak fiscal 2026 year) continues to gain share, and buybacks continue at the demonstrated pace. Value: about $25, plus net cash. In every case, cash on the balance sheet net of no debt adds a little over $2 per share to the result. Putting it together, the margin-of-safety price is around $8, a significant discount to the base-case estimate that reflects the real volatility in this business's profitability (owner earnings were negative in two of the past five years) and its dependence on a single large retail customer. For this to be wrong on the upside, the current sales rebound would need to prove temporary after all, or the tariff and customer-concentration pressures would need to prove more persistent than the company's own explanation suggests – something only the next couple of quarters of results can confirm.
