Applied Materials is one of the world's largest makers of the machines used to build computer chips. Its Semiconductor Systems segment sells deposition, etch, ion implant, polishing, inspection and packaging tools to chipmakers. Its Applied Global Services (AGS) segment sells spare parts, upgrades and multi-year service agreements that keep the installed base of those tools running. The fiscal year ends in late October. Fiscal 2025 sales were $28.4 billion: China $8.5 billion (30%), Taiwan $6.9 billion, South Korea $5.6 billion and Japan $2.3 billion. HOW WE MEASURED EARNINGS. We start with operating cash flow, remove swings in receivables, inventory and other working capital, subtract stock compensation as a real cost, and charge only the maintenance share of capital spending (the growth share is estimated from the company's ten-year average spending relative to sales). For fiscal 2025 this gives $5,273 million, or $6.53 per diluted share on 808 million shares. Because we value the whole business first and then subtract its debt, we add back the $239 million of interest paid, which gives business cash flow of $6.82 per share. The same measure for fiscal 2016 through 2025 was $1.89, $3.59, $3.16, $3.04, $4.36, $6.74, $7.18, $7.76, $7.22 and $6.82. Non-cash items such as the $179 million restructuring charge in fiscal 2025 are added back automatically. Total depreciation and amortization was only $435 million, so decay in acquired intangibles is not a material issue here. THE STARTING LEVEL. We use the median of fiscal 2019 through 2025, which is $6.82. Fiscal 2019 was the last industry downturn (sales fell 13% to $14.6 billion), so this window holds a trough, the 2020-2023 upswing and the 2024-2025 plateau. Earlier years describe a company with less than half today's sales. Actual growth in business cash flow per share in fiscal 2025 was -5.5% ($7.22 to $6.82). The base case assumes 0% in year one, which is above that trailing figure. The reason is in the latest quarterly report (filed August 20, 2026): nine-month fiscal 2026 sales were $24.0 billion (up 11.4%), sales in the quarter ended July 26, 2026 were $9.1 billion (up 25%), and operating cash flow was $5.57 billion (up 8.5%). That supports holding the level, not lifting it: capital spending rose to $1.99 billion from $1.48 billion, so cash after capital spending and stock compensation was $3.04 billion against $3.14 billion a year earlier (down 3.4%) despite the higher sales. Capital spending is running at 8.3% of sales against a ten-year average of 3.6%. We therefore credit no growth on the base level. BASE CASE ($115.6). Business cash flow stays at $6.82 per share indefinitely. What keeps it going is a structural feature already in evidence: research spending of $3.57 billion in fiscal 2025 ($3.23 billion and $3.10 billion in the two prior years) has kept the company at the leading edge through repeated chip-technology transitions, and every tool sold to a chipmaker becomes installed base that needs spares and service; management is moving AGS toward multi-year subscription agreements. Left out because none of it is contracted or already achieved: AI-driven demand, advanced packaging and new transistor designs, market-share gains, and any China recovery. Share buybacks are also left out; the share count fell from 1,116 million to 808 million over fiscal 2016-2025, but we value each share as if the cash goes to its owners. Business value is $113.7 per share ($91.0 billion). BEAR CASE ($85.3). Two named risks. China was 30% of sales ($8.5 billion) in fiscal 2025 and 37% ($10.1 billion) in fiscal 2024, and the company has received government subpoenas since 2022 about China shipments and export-control compliance. This case assumes half of China's sales are lost for good (about $4.3 billion) and that an industry downturn the size of fiscal 2019 then cuts remaining sales by 13%, leaving sales near $21 billion. Cash conversion is set at 19% of sales, the lowest of the past decade (19.4% in fiscal 2018 and 2025). That gives about $4.0 billion, or $5.00 per share, held flat with no recovery. Business value is $83.4 per share ($66.7 billion). Any fine from the investigations is not included: the company says it cannot estimate a range of loss, and no amount is disclosed in its annual report. BULL CASE ($160.8). The business starts at its best demonstrated level, $7.76 per share (fiscal 2023), and grows 3% a year for ten years before holding flat. The named support is the growth in long-term service agreements and spares that the company reported for fiscal 2025 and the strong fiscal 2026 sales above. 3% a year is far below the 11% annual sales growth of fiscal 2016-2025. Business value is $158.9 per share ($127.1 billion). DEBT. The company owes $6.44 billion in senior notes: $1.2 billion of 3.3% notes due April 2027 and the balance due 2029 to 2050, with a weighted average coupon of about 3.9%. Because it pays far less than 6% for a long time (for example 2.75% notes due 2050 and 1.75% notes due 2030), we reduce the debt by roughly $0.77 billion, to about $5.68 billion. It held $9.23 billion of cash and short-term investments at July 26, 2026; we treat $2.0 billion as needed to run the business, leaving $7.23 billion of excess cash. The company therefore holds about $1.56 billion ($1.94 per share) more than it owes in every case. Business value plus that net cash, on 800 million diluted shares: bear $66.7 billion plus $1.56 billion, or $68.3 billion ($85.3); base $91.0 billion plus $1.56 billion, or $92.5 billion ($115.6); bull $127.1 billion plus $1.56 billion, or $128.7 billion ($160.8). Even the bear case produces about $4.0 billion of business cash flow a year against roughly $0.24 billion of interest, and the 2027 maturity is a small fraction of cash on hand. MARGIN-OF-SAFETY PRICE ($70). About 39% below base value and about 18% below the bear case, a wide margin because equipment orders are cyclical, a third of sales depend on China, and export-control inquiries are unresolved. WHAT WOULD MAKE THIS WRONG. If capital spending stays near 8% of sales without a matching rise in sales, cash flow could settle below our $6.82 level. If export rules tighten beyond the bear case, or the investigations end in a large penalty, value falls further. If service agreements and AI-related orders convert into sustained cash flow growth, value is higher than our base. CHANGE SINCE OUR PREVIOUS REVIEW (August 2026: bear $63.50, base $117.50, bull $190.80). The base is little changed. The bear is higher and the bull lower because we now use a fixed 6% discount rate and credit only growth backed by evidence; the earlier version used 11%, 9% and 8% discount rates with 5% and 10% growth in the base and bull cases. A $252.5 million export-compliance accrual mentioned in that review could not be confirmed in the annual report, so it is not used. One data note: the interest-paid figures in the reported data repeat identical values across several years (for example $205 million in fiscal 2021 through 2024); any error is worth well under $0.03 per share.

Chart analysis
The filings give only sparse price points, so this is a broad read. The market value of shares held by outside investors was about $121 billion in April 2025 (roughly $150 a share), and price levels seen in later reviews through August 2026 were a multiple of that. A chartist would call this a powerful, sustained uptrend, with the stock far above its long-term moving averages and momentum-driven in recent quarters. That pattern fits a cyclical equipment maker rerated on hopes for artificial-intelligence chip spending. Prior trend highs and the rising long-term averages would be the levels to watch as support; a break below them would signal the trend has ended. Extended moves like this have historically been followed by sharp pullbacks when chip-equipment orders slow.
