AstroNova (fiscal year ends January 31) makes specialty printers and the supplies that run in them. Its Product ID segment ($104.2 million of $150.5 million fiscal 2026 revenue) sells label and package printers under the QuickLabel, TrojanLabel, AstroJet and GetLabels brands, plus Astro Machine mail-and-addressing inkjet systems and the MTEX printers acquired in May 2024. Its Aerospace segment ($46.3 million, 21% segment operating margin) makes cockpit and cabin printers and data recorders and sells aftermarket parts. About 54% of revenue ($80.9 million) is supplies such as ink, toner and labels sold into an installed base of printers, the steadiest part of the business. Order backlog was $28.2 million at January 31, 2026, flat with a year earlier. What it earns. We measure owner earnings as operating cash flow, less the swing in working capital, less stock compensation, less the part of capital spending needed just to stand still. Fiscal 2026 operating cash flow of $11.7 million looks strong, but $7.5 million of it came from shrinking inventories ($5.9 million) and receivables ($2.8 million), which cannot repeat. Without that release, owner earnings per share were $0.71 (fiscal 2023), $1.35 (2024), $0.48 (2025) and $0.21 (2026). Because debt is deducted separately below, we add back the cash interest paid ($3.0 million in fiscal 2026) to get the cash the business generates before its lenders: $0.82, $1.67, $0.84 and $0.61 per share for the same four years. We anchor on the median of those four years, $0.83 per share or about $6.5 million a year. The window starts with the Astro Machine acquisition in fiscal 2023; earlier years describe a smaller company and include pandemic-era swings (fiscal 2022 was also flattered by about $3.1 million of non-cash employee retention credit income). Intangible amortization ($2.9 million a year on acquired businesses) and goodwill write-offs (MTEX, $13.4 million in fiscal 2025) are added back because they are sunk acquisition costs; the wasting of acquired customer relationships is instead carried in the growth path, which is flat and then declining, and in the bear case. Capital spending has run at only 0.2% to 0.8% of revenue since fiscal 2023 versus about 2% earlier; we used actual spending, so if it has to catch up, value would be somewhat lower. Growth check. Business cash flow per share fell 28% in fiscal 2026 ($0.84 to $0.61). Our base case starts at about $6.5 million, above fiscal 2026's roughly $4.6 million, but that is a return to a normal level rather than growth, and the reasons are dated: the fiscal 2026 annual report itemizes about $3.1 million of costs that should not repeat (restructuring $1.4 million, MTEX litigation legal fees $0.7 million, proxy-related costs $0.7 million, MTEX transaction costs $0.3 million); the restructuring announced March 20, 2025 (about 10% of the workforce, roughly 70% of the MTEX product range cut) is reported to save about $3.0 million annualized; and the first quarter of fiscal 2027 (ended April 30, 2026) showed revenue up 4.4% to $39.4 million, net income of $0.65 million against a $0.38 million loss a year earlier, and operating cash flow of $3.0 million. We did not raise the anchor on one quarter. Every recent year has carried its own one-time items (MTEX deal costs in fiscal 2025, restructuring in fiscal 2024), which is why the base uses the median rather than a cleaned-up figure. Debt. At January 31, 2026 AstroNova owed $37.7 million: $15.7 million on its revolving credit line, a $9.5 million term loan, a $9.6 million second term loan (due August 2035), $0.5 million of equipment financing and $2.4 million of debt assumed with MTEX. By April 30, 2026 borrowings were about $36.0 million against $4.7 million of cash. The revolver and the first term loan are due August 4, 2028. The Bank of America agreement carries leverage and fixed-charge-coverage tests, and the company has needed waivers when it fell out of compliance in the past, most recently a waiver agreement in September 2025. The variable rate averaged 7.3% in fiscal 2026, about 1.3 points above our 6% rate, which we charge as $1.5 million of extra cost. The company also owes Honeywell $1.8 million of guaranteed minimum royalties; these are paid through financing rather than operating cash flow, so we treat them as debt. We count $2.4 million of the $4.7 million cash as surplus and keep the rest to run the business. Net debt comes to about $36.9 million, roughly $4.75 per share on 7.77 million diluted shares. A previous version of this analysis showed $18.3 million of debt; that figure covered only part of the borrowings. Base case: $79.2 million of business value, $36.9 million owed, $42.3 million (about $5.44 per share) left for shareholders. It holds business cash flow flat at $6.5 million for ten years, then declines 5% a year because nothing we can name and evidence keeps earnings growing or lasting beyond that: supplies sold to installed printers support the flat level, but revenue has been $148.1 million, $151.3 million and $150.5 million over the last three years. We credit no growth. Left out: acquisitions (MTEX has already required $13.7 million of goodwill write-offs and a 70% cut to its product range), and management's expectation of improving commercial aircraft production rates, which has not yet shown up in results. Bull case: $93.8 million of business value, $36.9 million owed, $56.9 million (about $7.32 per share). The only lever is the business's own: the $3.1 million of itemized one-time costs in fiscal 2026 do not recur, lifting business cash flow to about $7.7 million, held flat with the same decline after year ten. Bear case: $43.5 million of business value, $40.4 million owed, $3.1 million (about $0.39 per share). Business cash flow stays at fiscal 2026's $4.5 million and declines 2% a year for ten years, then 8% a year. The evidence: revenue flat over three years, fiscal 2026 service revenue down 8.8%, gross margin down 1.9 points to 31.6%, and aerospace aftermarket parts sales down $2.9 million as a prior-year backlog cleared. The revolver and term loan come due in August 2028 after earlier covenant waivers, so we assume refinancing costs an extra $3.5 million in higher interest and fees. Even so, business cash flow covers the roughly $2.6 to $3.0 million of annual interest. Compared with our previous estimates (bear $2.28, base $9.59, bull $22.09), the changes are mixed: we now discount at a flat 6% rather than 9% to 13%, which raises value, but we remove the working-capital release from cash flow and subtract the full debt, which lower it. What would make this wrong: cost savings larger than reported, or a recovery of the MTEX claim against its sellers (a Portuguese court granted a preventive seizure of the defendants' assets on February 16, 2026, which we do not count), would lift value; a covenant breach or an expensive refinancing in 2028 would hurt shareholders most, given the size of the debt relative to annual cash generation.

Chart analysis
The annual report gives no price history beyond noting that the shares trade on the Nasdaq Global Market under the symbol ALOT, held by roughly 235 holders of record. Our previous review noted a sharp rally, roughly fourfold, off the 52-week low. A chartist would read that as a strong, momentum-driven uptrend with rising highs and rising lows, but also an extended move for a small-cap: pullbacks toward the prior breakout area would be normal, and a close back below that area would be read as a failed breakout. Chart patterns say nothing about the company's earning power, and this view is kept separate from the valuation.
