Align Technology makes Invisalign clear aligners, which bring in roughly four-fifths of revenue, and sells iTero intraoral scanners, services and exocad dental design software through its Systems and Services segment. In 2025 revenue was $4.03 billion, up only 0.9%: higher aligner case volume added about $138 million, but lower average selling prices, from a shift toward cheaper product tiers and heavier discounting, took away about $127 million. The first half of 2026 was better. Revenue rose 5.2%, second-quarter aligner shipments rose 7.4% to 691,800 cases and aligner revenue rose 8.2%. Scanner and services revenue fell about 11% in the same quarter, so the scanner business is now shrinking while aligners grow. Earning power. We measure the cash the business produces for its owners: operating cash flow with short-term working-capital swings removed, less stock-based pay (a real cost of about $186 million in 2025) and less the capital spending needed to maintain the business. We also now deduct Align's office and factory lease payments, about $40 million a year. Our earlier figures had left these out by mistake: the accounts add lease expense back as a non-cash item, while the lease payments themselves sat inside a working-capital line we strip out. This correction lowers every year since 2019 by about $0.33 to $0.55 per share. On this basis, owner earnings per share were $7.27 in 2021, $2.51 in 2022 (after the post-pandemic demand drop and heavy factory spending), $5.71 in 2023, $6.56 in 2024 and $8.59 in 2025. The 2025 figure is flattered. Operating cash flow was held down by $356 million of working-capital outflows: a $112 million fall in deferred revenue, the payment of 2024 bonuses and the last payments of the 2017 tax-reform transition tax. The accounts also include $76.9 million of accelerated depreciation on manufacturing equipment being retired early and a $23.1 million write-down on the Juarez, Mexico plant being sold. Both of those are non-cash and are added back. We previously attributed the 2025 jump in depreciation to the finished capacity buildout. The filing shows it was mostly this restructuring write-off. Deferred revenue has now fallen two years in a row, by $80 million and then $112 million, and the filings give no reason. Treating it as a timing effect is a judgement call, and a shift toward products with fewer prepaid refinements would mean some of that cash is not coming back. We take the median of 2021 to 2025, about $6.56 a share. That window runs from the 2021 peak through the 2022 trough to today, and it covers the business since the exocad acquisition. The first half of 2026 (net income of $221 million and operating cash flow of $344 million, against $182 million a year earlier) is consistent with this level and runs somewhat above it. We then remove about $0.17 a share of after-tax interest income on the company's cash, because that cash is counted separately below. That leaves about $6.39 a share as the starting earning power of the operating business. Debt and cash. Align has no borrowings. Its $300 million revolving credit line, which matures in December 2027, was undrawn, and the company paid no interest. At June 30, 2026 it held $1.10 billion of cash. We set aside $300 million as needed to run a global business, and $37.5 million for a UK VAT liability booked in the second quarter of 2026. That leaves about $765 million, or $10.70 a share, of surplus cash, which we add to every case. Our previous estimate did not count this cash at all. Lease obligations are not subtracted as debt, because the lease payments are already charged against earnings. Growth credited. Earning power grew 31% in 2025, but most of that was the working-capital effect above. The base case assumes 3% growth in year one, well below that trailing rate and below the 5% revenue growth of the first half of 2026. It then tapers to 2% and 1% before leveling off. That modest near-term growth rests on case volume already growing and on the 2025 cost-cutting, which has already been carried out. We give no credit for wider adoption of clear aligners by adults and teens, market-share gains, management's target of at least one percentage point of operating-margin improvement in 2027, or its new strategic review, because none of these is yet in hand. We also no longer treat share buybacks as growth. Align plans $400 to $500 million of repurchases in 2026 with $733 million of authorization left, but that money comes out of the same cash flow we are already valuing, so crediting both would count it twice. Our earlier analysis did count both. This change, together with the lease correction, explains most of the drop in our estimates. How long the earnings last. Align has led clear aligners for about 25 years. It kept that lead after its core patents expired in 2017 and 2018 and after well-funded rivals entered, one of which (SmileDirectClub) went bankrupt in 2023. That record, plus a network of treating dentists and orthodontists and the iTero scanner base, is real evidence of durability. But the 2025 price cuts show the franchise is now defending its position with price. Our earlier estimate assumed earnings would last forever after year ten. We now hold them level through year 25 in the base case and then fade them to zero over the following 15 years. Bear case: $57.96 a share. Volume growth stalls, as it did in 2022 when revenue fell 5.5%. Price cuts continue at 2025's pace of about 4% of aligner revenue a year, and scanner revenue keeps falling as it did in mid-2026. Earning power declines about 4% a year for ten years to roughly $4.25 a share, and then fades to zero by year 20 because in this case the franchise has visibly lost its pricing power. The business is worth about $3.38 billion ($47.26 a share). It owes nothing and holds $10.70 a share of surplus cash, so the shares are worth $57.96. Base case: $105.39 a share. Earning power grows about 6% over three years to roughly $6.78 a share, where volume growth and price erosion roughly offset each other, as in 2023 to 2025. It holds there through year 25 and then fades out by year 40. The business is worth about $6.77 billion ($94.69 a share), with no debt and $10.70 a share of surplus cash. Bull case: $157.15 a share. The business starts at its current run rate of about $7.30 a share, a level the first half of 2026 already supports. The mid-2026 volume momentum and the restructuring savings lift earning power 5% a year for five years and 3% a year for the next five, to about $10.80. It then holds through year 30 and fades out by year 45. The business is worth about $10.47 billion ($146.45 a share), plus $10.70 a share of surplus cash. Risks not in the numbers. Two antitrust class actions, one for dental practices that bought Invisalign directly and one for consumers, are on appeal at the Ninth Circuit after Align won summary judgment in 2024. Oral argument was held in April 2025, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a brief supporting a broader legal standard, and no ruling has been disclosed. These suits seek treble damages. A related, narrower claim was settled in 2025 for $31.75 million. In June 2026 the European Commission opened a formal investigation into whether Align's handling of scans from rival scanners improperly ties Invisalign to iTero. No dollar amount has been disclosed for any of these matters, so they are left out of every case. An adverse appeal ruling would be the most important single development to watch. Align also manufactures aligners in China and sells there against local competitors. In August 2026 it won a patent ruling against one of them. What would make this wrong: on the downside, deferred revenue keeps shrinking and the price cuts outrun volume growth. On the upside, the 2026 volume recovery proves lasting and the lower prices draw in enough new patients to rebuild earnings above the 2025 level.

Chart analysis
A chartist would call ALGN a stock in a long-term downtrend. It peaked near $730 in September 2021, collapsed to about $175 by late 2022, rallied to about $385 in mid-2023, and then made a series of lower highs through 2024 and 2025. Over the past year it has traded between about $122 and $200. The recent move up to the low $150s (a 4% one-day jump around September 22, 2026) is a bounce off the $122 low that has not yet broken the pattern of lower highs. A chartist would treat the $120s as support and roughly $200 as the resistance that has to be cleared before calling the downtrend over. Until then, the move from about $122 looks more like basing than a new uptrend.
