Business condition attached to the margin of safety Spot lithium pricing stabilized off its multi-year lows, and Albemarle's recently completed conversion capacity (Australia, China) running at healthy utilization.
Albemarle is one of the world's largest lithium producers, alongside a smaller but steadier specialty bromine (flame retardants) business and a refining-catalyst business (Ketjen). Its lithium comes from some of the lowest-cost sources in the industry: brine operations in Chile's Salar de Atacama, a large stake in the Greenbushes hard-rock mine in Australia (held through a joint venture), and a growing set of chemical-conversion plants in Australia, China and the U.S. that turn raw lithium into the battery-grade material EV makers need. The business is genuinely cyclical, and the last decade shows why: owner earnings per share swung from under $1 in 2021 to nearly $23 in 2022, when spot lithium prices spiked more than tenfold on an EV-demand surge that supply couldn't match, and then fell back sharply as Chinese and African producers flooded the market and prices collapsed through 2023-2025. We anchored this valuation on the median of the last ten years of owner earnings (roughly $4.34 per share), deliberately spanning that full boom-and-bust cycle rather than picking either the 2022 peak or the recent trough - both would mislead in opposite directions. A meaningful accounting judgment went into this: Albemarle has been in the middle of a multi-billion-dollar capacity build-out (new conversion trains in Australia and China, expansions in Chile), and revenue has swung mostly with lithium prices rather than with volumes shipped. That means the usual approach of separating "growth" capital spending from "maintenance" spending by comparing it to revenue growth doesn't work well here - it would mistakenly call all of 2024-2025's capital spending pure maintenance, understating true earning power, because prices fell even as new capacity kept coming online. Instead, we used depreciation as a proxy for the capital spending needed just to sustain existing plants, which we believe better reflects the underlying economics of a resource-and-plant business like this one. Our base case assumes lithium prices normalize well below the 2022 spike but well above the current trough - roughly the level at which a meaningful share of the higher-cost supply that caused today's glut becomes uneconomic - with earnings recovering gradually over several years as recently built capacity in Australia and China reaches fuller utilization. On that path, we estimate the shares are worth roughly $81. Our bear case assumes the current oversupply persists for years - continued low-cost Chinese and African supply growth outpacing a slower-than-hoped EV adoption curve - keeping prices, and Albemarle's earnings, near today's depressed levels indefinitely. The company also carries $2.3 billion of mandatory convertible preferred stock issued in 2024 to shore up its balance sheet during the downturn, which converts to common shares in 2027 and dilutes per-share value in a prolonged downturn; we've built that into this case. On that path we estimate the shares are worth roughly $23. Our bull case assumes demand accelerates - cheaper batteries and stricter emissions rules pull EV adoption forward - while high-cost supply stays shut in at today's prices, allowing a real but more moderate price recovery (well short of the 2022 spike) that lets Albemarle's low-cost, already-built capacity earn strongly with little further capital needed. On that path we estimate the shares are worth roughly $159. Because Albemarle's lithium and Greenbushes reserves are long-lived, we assumed the business continues indefinitely beyond our ten-year forecast rather than winding down, at a level tied to the mid-cycle price environment in each case. In the bull case, more than two-thirds of the value depends on that assumption holding, so a reader should treat the bull number as more speculative than the base case. Given how wide the gap is between our bear and base cases here - a hallmark of a highly cyclical, commodity-price-driven business - the margin-of-safety price sits at a large discount to our base-case estimate, around $41 per share. That price also assumes some sign that spot lithium prices have stopped falling and that Albemarle's newly built plants are starting to run at healthy utilization. One data limitation worth noting plainly: a portion of the year-to-year swing in reported operating cash flow versus net income - driven by Albemarle's large equity stake in its Greenbushes joint venture, whose earnings and cash distributions to Albemarle can differ substantially in a given year - could not be fully traced line-by-line from the data available for this analysis. We relied on the company's own reported operating cash flow figures, which are audited, rather than attempting to fully rebuild them from smaller components.

OE = CFO - WC movement - SBC - maintenance capex (D&A proxy). CFO=$687.9M (restated per FY2025 10-K); WC movement=-$1,055.0M net source-of-cash (per the company's reported 'change in operating capital' line - inventory and receivables drawn down sharply as lithium prices and volumes reset; this figure could not be fully reconciled line-by-line to net income from tags available, flagged as data-quality note); SBC=$32.1M; maintenance capex (D&A)=$588.6M; OE=687.9+1,055.0-32.1-588.6=$1,122.1M; diluted shares=117.516M; OE/share=$9.55. Note: FY2024 net income was a loss (-$1,179.4M) after large equity-method income/impairment-related swings; CFO nonetheless remained positive, which is why OE is positive despite the reported net loss - a case where CFO is the more reliable base per the sourcing hierarchy.

OE = CFO - WC movement - SBC - maintenance capex (D&A proxy). CFO=$1,907.8M; WC movement=-$1,108.7M net use (large inventory/receivables build during the lithium price supercycle: AR $786.1M use + Inventory $1,609.6M use + AP $1,287.1M source); SBC=$30.5M; maintenance capex (D&A)=$300.8M; OE=1,907.8+1,108.7-30.5-300.8=$2,685.2M; diluted shares=117.793M; OE/share=$22.80. FY2022 was the peak of the lithium price supercycle (spot lithium carbonate prices in China briefly exceeded $80,000/tonne); this year's OE is far above trend and is treated as a cycle peak, not the anchor, per the median-of-cycle methodology used for valuation.

OE = CFO - working capital movement - SBC - maintenance capex (proxied by D&A; see note). CFO=$735.5M; WC movement=+$27.1M (net source: change in AR $42.8M use + Inventory $26.0M source + AP $44.0M source, per cash-flow reconciliation); SBC=$17.0M; maintenance capex proxied by D&A=$226.2M (see judgment-call note below); OE=$735.5-(-27.1)-17.0-226.2=$465.2M... arithmetic: OE=CFO+27.1-17.0-226.2=$465.2M (rounding); diluted shares=113.239M; OE/share=$4.11. Source: FY2018 10-K, accession 0000915913-19-000021. Judgment call: Albemarle's revenue swings are driven primarily by lithium/bromine benchmark PRICE, not volume, so the standard capex-ratio growth/maintenance split (tying growth capex to revenue growth) misclassifies capex during price-driven revenue declines as pure maintenance. We instead proxy maintenance capex with total D&A across all 10 years for consistency; capex in excess of D&A reflects capacity expansion (Kemerton, Chinese lithium conversion trains, Wodgina, etc.). Anchor window for valuation: FY2016-FY2025 (full lithium price cycle: 2016-17 post-correction trough, 2018-19 mid-cycle, 2020 COVID dip, 2021 pre-supercycle trough, 2022-23 supercycle, 2024-25 bust).
