Business condition attached to the margin of safety At least two of the next three quarterly reports show revenue clearly recovering from the fiscal 2026 pace (roughly $10-13 million a quarter) toward $18-20 million or more a quarter, consistent with the $80.6 million order backlog reported at the end of fiscal 2026 being delivered on schedule rather than slipping or being cancelled.
Aehr Test Systems makes specialized burn-in and test equipment used by chipmakers to stress-test semiconductors before they ship. Its core wafer-level systems (FOX-XP/FOX-NP) were the go-to tool for testing silicon carbide (SiC) power chips used in electric-vehicle inverters, which drove a boom in revenue from about $17 million in fiscal 2021 to a peak of $66 million in fiscal 2024. Since then, EV-related demand has fallen sharply - SiC contactor shipments dropped and revenue slid to $59 million in fiscal 2025 and $50 million in fiscal 2026 - while a new growth leg has emerged in burn-in systems for silicon-photonics and AI data-center chips, and the 2024 acquisition of Incal Technology added package-level (rather than wafer-level) burn-in products. The business is unusually concentrated: in fiscal 2024 a single EV-related customer was 67% of revenue; by fiscal 2026 the top three customers (spread across the newer AI/photonics and legacy SiC lines) were 26%, 14% and 11%. Owner earnings - operating cash flow after stripping out working-capital swings, stock-based pay, and only the capital spending needed to sustain rather than grow the business - swung from about $0.46 per share at the 2023 peak to losses of $0.18-$0.34 per share in fiscal 2025-2026 as the EV cycle rolled over. We used the median of fiscal 2022-2026 (the full boom-to-bust cycle since the SiC business reshaped the company) as the normalized starting point, about $0.29 per share, rather than the depressed trailing figure. That said, fiscal 2026 ended with $80.6 million of confirmed order backlog, more than five times the prior year's $15.2 million, and the company has stated it expects a return to profitability in fiscal 2027 - a specific, filed fact, not just optimism - so our base case assumes a swing back to meaningful profitability in fiscal 2027 rather than a continuation of the recent decline. Our base case assumes backlog converts at a healthy but incomplete pace, gross margins stay below the 2023-2024 peak (higher warranty and acquisition-related costs persist), and growth moderates to a mid-single-digit pace by the middle of the next decade as the company continues re-purposing its test platforms for whatever segment of the chip industry is growing fastest, a pattern it has repeated for two decades. That produces an estimated value of roughly $11.60 per share, with about two-thirds of that value resting on what the business earns beyond the next ten years - a modest, low-single-digit-growth view of a company that keeps finding a new home for its core burn-in technology, funded entirely out of the ordinary reinvestment already charged against its earnings. Our bear case assumes the EV/SiC business stays weak and the newer AI/photonics customers - which are also concentrated - disappoint or churn, keeping the company near breakeven-to-losses for most of the next decade; because Aehr carries no debt and finished fiscal 2026 with about $116 million in cash after a large stock offering, it survives comfortably, but the shares are worth little beyond that cash cushion, roughly $1.40. Our bull case assumes both growth legs - SiC recovery and AI/photonics - accelerate together, margins recover toward prior peaks, and Aehr becomes a larger, more diversified test-equipment supplier, worth roughly $25.50. On accounting judgment: stock-based compensation is added back by operating cash flow and then subtracted once as a real cost; a one-time $20.8 million non-cash tax benefit that inflated fiscal 2024's reported net income was excluded since it generated no cash; and depreciation/amortization here is almost entirely ordinary equipment depreciation rather than amortization of acquired intangibles, so no separate wasting-asset adjustment was needed. Given how much of the outcome depends on a small number of customers actually placing and honoring orders, the margin-of-safety price applies only once the backlog begins to show up as delivered revenue, and even then sits at a meaningful discount to our base-case estimate given how wide the range of outcomes is.
